Not much use for any design work G. Randy Slone's book much better

I purchased this book along with High Power Audio Amplifier Construction Manual by G. Randy Slone.If you want to read about

300 pages of information you can obtain free from Mr. Self's website then buy all means by this book because it is a repeat of the blamless amplifier theory, however if you really want a design book with the whyfore's included Mr. Slone's book is the book for you and should rate 10 stars for audio design. I really don't understand why Amazon hyped this book. I should have saved my money I expected more from Mr. Self.

The book is very deep in some topics but is very poor in design formulas. The formulas should be included, explained and can be skipped by the readers who are not keen on mathematics.

Some schematic diagrams are simply not readable as the printing size, or the book format, is too small.

Excellent in-depth exploration of many points of audio power amp design. Very clearly written, though does assume basic electronic and audio knowledge. Cordell covers some of the same points, but the two books complement each other and it is worth reading both.

Johnston provides us with laughs and tears over the years

Johnston, having written for what seems to be a lifetime already, continues the story of the loveable "For Better or For Worse" family that many countries have come to love and treasure. One of the only 'real' families in comics, Johnston cleverly and eloquently mixes pain and laughter --- succinctly paraphrasing much of life.
"What, Me Pregnant?" is another chapter of the "For Better or For Worse" saga, with Elly finding herself pregnant... at 40! Her other kids in high school and preparing to go to college, this is unexpected and delightful for the fans of the series. This book tracks Elly's pregnancy and continues the personal tales of the other family members as they grow up -- and grow older. A wonderful book that will have you glued to the pages until the end.

Too superficial

I bought this book hoping to learn more about how to invest in foreign stocks since Templeton was known for that. Unfortunately other than a few simple things like checking to make sure a government's debt is no more than 25% of GDP, there were very few specifics. The author presents a couple of examples where "Uncle John" took advantage of distrust in foreign markets (like investing in South Korea during the Asian financial crises) to make great investments, but doesn't go enough into enough detail to be of any real benefit to anybody.

The book is more about the very basics of being a value investor and the attitudes needed to be successful in investing (ie, don't follow the crowd, buy low P/E or low PEG stocks, diversification). But even that is presented in somewhat of a haphazard way compared to other books, such as Peter Lynch's books or some of the books about Warren Buffet. Chapter 6, "No Trouble TO Short The Bubble", is not much more than a recount of the tech wreck and an admonishment to people who bought tech stocks at high P/Es. The main points of the book could have been made in half the pages. Only the last chapter on China was interesting.

I gave three stars because this would be an ok book for a beginning investor, but for an intermediate or advanced investor this in not much more than a rah-rah book about value investing and is more like one or two stars.

Good Advice, horrible writing

Templeton was truly one of the greatest investors of all time. This book does give you insight into his thinking and methodology. So it should be a great book since there are very few books about him. However be warned the writing is just horrendous. I never cared about the writing style of a how to book, but this one is just terrible. Extremely hard to keep you interested, as if a 11 year old wrote this. It repeats the small irrelevant points as if it was the greatest discovery ever. It is just very annoying to read. Still I did learn from it. It explained that Templeton used bottom up approach to pick countries, if he found many companies to buy in Japan then he picked that country (He did not look at Macro factors and then decide to pick stock in that country)It gave good examples about how not to follow the crowd into hot markets and simple pointers like look for low P/E's, and use diversification unless you are right 100% of the time. But it was truly very hard to read.

PMI’s Standard for Portfolio Management Third Edition is the first edition that is worth buying

PMI’s Standard for Portfolio Management Third Edition is the first edition that is worth buying. Having read the 1st and 2nd editions and reviewed the exposure draft for the 2nd and 3rd, PMI has come a long way with the third edition. Nearly all the major components of portfolio management are referenced in this edition (gate reviews being the most significant omission). At the time of this review, I am preparing for the PfMP exam and have read over most of the 3rd edition twice and have studied several sections in detail. It is still not perfect as there are several inconsistencies and items I consider too theoretical (hence the four-star rating), but overall it is a worthy addition to the portfolio management library.

Chapters 1-2 do a great job of giving an overview of portfolio management with the roles and responsibilities needed to make it work. Chapter 3 also does a pretty good job of creating a structure around which to organize the remaining chapters by setting each of the five knowledge areas (Portfolio Strategic Management, Portfolio Governance Management, Portfolio Performance Management, Portfolio Communication Management, and Portfolio Risk Management) in a table with the three process groups (Defining, Aligning, and Authorizing/Controlling). Chapters 4-5 in my opinion are the weakest parts in the book. There are some great additions such as the portfolio strategic plan and the portfolio roadmap, but some of the strategic processes seem out of order (e.g. prioritizing projects before they have been evaluated by a governance board) or are omitted (e.g. gate reviews). In addition, the Portfolio Charter deliverable is just too theoretical for most organizations to adopt. Chapter 6 does a good job of addressing resource capacity management and benefits realization (two big omissions in previous editions). I found chapter 7 to be very useful related to portfolio communication and I got fresh insight on portfolio risk management from chapter 8.

In short, the PMI Standard for Portfolio Management Third Edition is worth buying and offers great information for portfolio management practitioners.

If you have to read Robbin's, get this Pocket Companion!

Any med student knows Robbin's is like running into a 1,500 page brick wall over and over again to become the future Dr. House of the world. The pocket companion is perfect for finding key concepts and reviewing the day or 2 before exams. Cannot live without this Pocket Companion. It's going to get me through class, rotations, residency, and life as a doctor.

Handy to keep around

Reading the Pocket version helped me stomach the monster task of reading the "big" version. This pocket version has most of the details from the book, but not all. It was convenient to bring places - it really did fit into my shorts pockets! The authors intended to capture the wisecracking attitude of the Big Book, but fell well short. Too squeezed for space to include humor.

Good luck to all souls attempting a PBD course.
