Nothing is as it first appears.

I found this to e a fast read with great characters, I appreciated Mr. Metzgers skill in presenting Antons issues with his new school while not revealing the Antons biggest issue. Nothing is as it first appears. The interrelations hip of the characters was wll done. I apapreciated the way labels were addressed at the end of the story.

A must read, simply amazing!

Not only have I found a new author, I’ve found the most amazing and beautiful storyline that I have ever read. I can’t begin to describe the amount of emotions that this book invoked in me, I went from sadness tears, to standing up applauding tears to pure enjoyment tears and I have to mention that the “coming clean” scene, had belly ache laughter tears – one of the best scenes ever!

The storyline reminded me of the age old saying of “you can run but you can’t hide”. Anton moved schools thinking that his past was behind him, no more taunts would be thrown at him, he would start anew and nobody would know. But he meets Jude….

Anton realises that he can’t escape or hide his past, Jude has the right to know.

No spoilers from me but I want to say that I loved Anton and I loved Jude. The author’s characterisation of these two boys and they are boys, just 15 years old, was remarkable, they became real to me.

All the supporting characters added depth and energy to this wonderful story but it’s Anton and Jude that made it compulsive reading. I read the entire book in one sitting and learnt so much about transgender issues, things that I never even thought of before were explained simply but thoroughly, it was educational without the “labelling” which I personally detest.

This is YA at its very best, please don’t be put off by the age grouping, this book deserves to be read.

Highly, highly recommended.

Completely Wonderful

In a splendid mix of humor and teenage angst, Spy Stuff brings out the daunting difficulties of being trans male when all you really wanna be is male, all the while still being incredibly charming and a fantastically encapturing read.

First days at a new school are hard enough, but first days at a new school when you are hiding a secret that forced to you change schools are even worse. Especially when you find yourself smitten with the supposedly straight class-clown. Add to that the fact that Anton’s father is a d**che who misgenders him at every turn, his mother is struggling to find work after divorcing his dad, and that even the smallest of slip-ups could mean that his secret runs him from yet another school. Yeah, first days at a new school can be hard.

But they can also mean a new and fresh start.

There are good characters, there are great books, and there are stories I damn well wish had been around when I was still a teenager. This just happens to be all three.

I’m not entirely sure how I missed this when it came out a few months ago, but I am deeply grateful that it has come to my attention now. In my quest to read more books that reflect my own life in some ways, I’m willing to take just about anything that has trans characters in it. Yet this book delivers more than just a trans character. It gives us a compelling (and extremely well written) story and so many small and big moments that capture the attention and make you end the book begging for more.

And I really do wish that this book had been around when I was a teen. Granted, back then I don’t know if I’d have had the courage to go beyond my upbringing to read it, but even the chance would have been nice. There is so much here that I identify with, so much that speaks to me, and while I wish I had the chance to read it then, I am thrilled to have the chance to read it and share it with others now. I don’t really read much YA (the teen years are usually ones I am more than happy to forget even existed) but the subject matter forced me to look past that and see the gem of a story inside.

I am so totally recommending you read this. Hell, I’m recommending you read the darn thing then recommend it to everyone you see. It was not just a great book with trans characters, or a great book with a great story…it was just a lot of fun to read. I hardly put it down once I started. And once I got to the end all I could think was I gotta have more.

About the Author

PETER B. RAABE teaches philosophy at Simon Fraser University and University College of the Fraser Valley in Vancouver, Canada./e He is also a philosophical counselor in private practice and was the first person in Canada to be awarded a doctorate based on his theoretical and practical work in philosophical counseling. Dr. Raabe publishes a monthly column on philosophical counseling and has written numerous journal articles on the topic.

Valuable book

Philosophical Counseling is a paradoxical new field that purports to help people with life's problems by engaging them in philosophical discussions. This is paradoxical in a couple of ways. On the one hand, providing assistance with life's difficulties was one of the roots of philosophy, so how can this be a new field? On the other hand, many people, especially many professional philosophers, consider philosophic problems in the year 2001 to be very far removed from the problems of life. Smug within their ivory towers, philosophers have long ago immunized themselves to the charge that their studies are of no earthly use. It brings a smile to outsiders, and causes a commotion among the philosophers, when a philosopher hangs out a shingle offering a useful service for a fee.
One of the central issues that Raabe examines in his book is: How can that fee be ethically justified? In the process of examining this, Raabe provides a broad survey of the field of Philosophical Counseling. Since the field is new, there is little general consensus even as to it's definition. Many of its practitioners use widely differing definitions of Philosophical Counseling in their own work. Raabe offers a critical survey of these various conceptions. Strikingly, Raabe is critical of the "Beyond Method Method" of the movement's founder, Gerd Achenbach.
One man with whom I discussed "Philosophical Counseling - Theory and Practice" said in mock horror, "This is about counseling, not philosophy!" It is about counseling, explicitly and didactically so; the book could serve as an introductory text on counseling, I think. But the book is about philosophy too, for one of Philosophical Counseling's main ideas is that many of the stresses and upsets that people feel grow out of philosophical mistakes or misconceptions.
Philosophical Counseling has a very broad overlap with psychological counseling. Many methods of psychological counseling, such as Cognitive Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, deal extensively with philosophic ideas in their practice. Part of Raabe's task is to find something that would in fact distinguish Philosophical Counseling from other already well established forms of counseling, and also to find a task that Philosophical Counseling can perform better than psychological counseling.
Very broadly, the divide that Raabe finds is the one between therapy and education. Sometimes something is wrong with us; our leg is broken, we're attacked by germs, chemical structures in our brains are upset - these are all clearly medical problems. At other times, we just don't understand right, or we just don't know how to do something; we get wet feet because we don't know the tide is rising, we can't cross the water because we can't find the bridge. These are clearly educational problems. One might imagine a boundary between medicine and education; a place where the influence of the structure of the body blends with the influence of ideas to determine things like our various capabilities, aptitudes and attitudes, as well as our experience of happiness with our existence. One side of that boundary is the terrain of the psychologist, the other side of that boundary is the terrain of the philosopher.
I'm not a philosopher or a counselor, but I found Raabe's book both an interesting read and a wealth of information. I'm not an insider to the growing Philosophical Counseling movement, but I understand that the challenges that Raabe has raised are controversial in many quarters. But as Raabe says, unless the movement can properly and ethically establish just what it's practice is, it will be threatened by charlatans.

Better than Psychology.

Psychology looks at controlled scientific experiments to find out how the mind reacts to society. Philosophy is concerned with the conceptional questions like what reality? A psychologist would examine mental illness by asking the client questions. A philosopher would ask, "What is mental Illness?" Two different worlds. You cannot just blindly do what a psychologist tells you to be cured. You must philosophically think about what the problem is in the first place....Regards Frank...

Great Study Material

Awesome lectures! This book, paired with the AP Calculus BC Lecture Notes: AP Calculus BC Interactive Lectures Vol.1 and Vol.2, has given me enough knowledge and practice to receive a score of 5 on the AP Exam. I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing to take the AP exam or anyone wanting supplemental study material for class.
The lectures are concise and easy to follow, with many diagrams and fun pictures that keep the lectures interesting and fun to follow along.
Many examples are provided with solutions clearly explained.

This book was crucial in helping me develop a thorough understanding of calculus and preparing me for the AP exam. It contains very detailed explanations of each concept, followed by many clear examples that demonstrate how to apply the concept in problem-solving. It is very well-written and easily understandable. By practicing the examples and reviewing the problem-solving strategies offered in the book, I was able to do well on my calculus finals in school and I felt much more confident about taking the AP exam.

I liked it

I found this book about a month ago at a used book store for
$5.00. I've read the whole thing except for one chapter about
raising kids because I don't have any.
Granted, there is a lot of the same material covered as you'll find in any of the dozen or so codependence books I've either read all or part of. But there is also some unique material covered from the male angle. So much of the codependence material seems targeted to women and I'm not knocking that but
I think the male thing needs coverage as well.
I think Dr. Ackerman did a good job. But I beleive very much
in the theory which he writes about here....that so much of the
crazy things we do as adults are triggered by something that
happened when we were kids and that we'll be better off if we
can unravel those triggers and thus, defuse them.

A book of diar importance that gives a name to the struggle.

Honestly, I'm on chapter four. I was searching for any aid I could find to get me through an emotionally and mentally stressing time. After reading the book's preface, I was transfixed and compelled to read this book, because finally there was someone who understood. Understood the situation, and the person, of my life. I've only begun Dr. Ackerman's book, however, I know I have been much more positive and outgoing due to a new feeling of hope, thanks to Silent Sons. The afterthoughts, case examples, facts, and personal thoughts and feelings make this a real and complete book. A real and helpful book. Silent Sons, by Dr. Robert J. Ackerman, breaks down the concept of silent sons all the way helping to rebuild the healthy, fulfilled you.

A man's best friend

I was first referred to "Silent Sons" by a man who felt that it had helped him greatly to recover from his expereince of sexual abuse. Since then I used it for my group work with abused men, mentoring, and as a text for a Sociology course on Men's Studies at The University of Prince Edward Island. I believe that reading this book by a man is like having a good friend with one arm on your shoulder as you take a walk though your life and look at all of your issues in a friendly, yet challenging way that is both constructive and empowering in helping a man to be more authentic and to be free form the learned lies of the past.
I highly recommend "Silent Sons" for personal use by men and for women, THE gift for the men in your life. 902-367-2743
