Excellent But Not Elementary

General metaphysics is a difficult and central area of philosophy. While there is a lot of literature devoted to it, I do not think that there are very many introductory texts. Michael Loux's "Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction" fills a gap.
This book is devoted exclusively to general metaphysics; there is no discussion of the subjects of special metaphysics, such as the existence of God, the nature of mind, and free will. The subjects covered are the nature of universals, substance, propositions, modality, persistence through time, and the Realism/Anti-Realism debate.
Loux explains the different theories about these subjects and evaluates arguments for and against these theories. The focus is on the contemporary literature; however, some historical background is provided. While the coverage is comprehensive, depth is not sacrificed.
The chapters are well-organised, each beginning with a brief chapter overview and concluding with suggestions for further reading. Loux style is clear and friendly.
While introductory, this book is not elementary. It is intended for students who have already attended an introductory philosophy course. Those without any previous exposure to contemporary analytic philosophy may find it very difficult.
I recommend this book strongly for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in philosophy. Readers may also be interested in Loux's anthology, "Metaphysics: Contemporary Readings".

A gateway to current metaphysics...

Anyone interested in the issues that make up current debates in metaphysics should read this book. It opens up an entirely new vocabularly and conceptual scheme for those with little or no prior knowledge of the subject. Working through the chapters, arguments, and positions will greatly facilitate comprehension of more technical philosophical papers. At the same time the book presents the material in a technical fashion; it reads like real philosophy, as it should. Arguments receive in depth treatment and important sides to issues get presented fairly. For a beginner, this book will present many challenges. But overcoming these will reap great rewards. Probably the best thing to do after completing the book is to read it again. Of course this principle holds true for a lot of philosophy books, but since this one builds a foundation a second deep reading becomes almost essential.

Seven chapters cover some of the biggest issues in metaphysics. Each chapter builds on its predecessors, so the book doesn't hold up well to random browsing. It should be comprehended linearly. Starting off, the nearly ancient debate between nominalists and realists (with a small 'r') fills two chapters. Arguments for and against both positions take up most of the space (e.g., abstract entities, predication, Ockham's Razor, etc., along with a delineation of the various types of nominalism - austere, metalinguistic, trope theory). Chapter three discusses the arguments relating to the nature of concrete particulars, or the 'substratum' versus the 'bundle' theory. The nature of propositions gets a fair shake in chapter four; are they abstract necessarily existing entities or just talk about regular old concrete objects? Next, David Lewis' eyebrow-raising view of possible worlds and modality is coherently outlined in chapter five. Here the discussion get really juicy and complex. Modality is no picnic. Do possible worlds actually exist in the same manner of our own world or are possible worlds merely potential actual worlds that never obtained the level of an 'actual world'? Chapter six revisits the concrete particulars examined in chapter three, but now with the element of time included. Two views, endurantism and perdurantism, are juxtaposed along with two theories of time, presentism and eternalism. Finally, chapter seven gets to the bottom of many of the book's debates, which can be, cursorily, ground down to the question of human beings' connections between language and the world. Do languages actually refer to a mind-independent world or is the world we talk about inextricably linked to our sensory and conceptual processes? These questions explode in the debate between Realists (this time with a capital 'R') and anti-Realists. Anti-Realists challenge the 'traditional' notion of a direct connection between language and a mind-independent world. The idea of the 'inscrutablility of reference' (from W.V.O. Quine, though with a specific interpretation by the author and Hilary Putnam) provides meat for the anti-Realist's argument. This final chapter sees Realists and anti-Realists duking it out over these issues. The chapter, and the entire book, provide plenty of food for the brain to chew on.

Throughout the book, the author argues for an Aristotelian-flavored "being 'qua' being" approach to metaphysics. This is very apparent in the book's excellent introduction as well as in the final chapter (aptly titled "The challenge of anti-Realism"). Though he makes his preference explicit, the arguments against his position still get a very fair shake. The author's position in no way degrades the quality of for-and-against delineation of arguments. So, even if readers do not agree with the author's overall stance, they can still obtain much useful knowledge.

Though the book's subtitle reads "a contemporary introduction" it is not an easy read. Major universities have used it for courses (the University of Minnesota's Philosophy department used it in a 5-XXX level class). Still, the book is not inaccessible to any careful general reader. It just takes some work. And that work, especially to someone seeking an entryway into the foundations of current metaphysical debates, will pay off in droves.

Well written and lucid

This is an excellent introduction to contemporary metaphysics. You cannot put this book down without clearly understanding the many shades of Realism and Nominalism. The chapters on necessity and possibility were excellent.
For me, at least, there is the glaring omission of any sort of contribution that A. Whitehead (the 20th century's pre-eminent metaphysician)made to the field, but that's understandable in an introductory text.
This is philosophy. Go for it.

Wilbur Monroe Leaf (aka Munro Leaf) (1905–1976) is an American author of children's literature who wrote and illustrated many books during his long career. His books were illustrated by a number of famous artists, including  Ludwig Bemelmans, Robert Lawson, and Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). He is best known for The Story of Ferdinand (1936).

Beware: this is NOT the original "Ferdinand"!

The current release of this book -- published by Grosset & Dunlap -- is significantly abridged from the original. The current edition is about 20% smaller and has fewer than half the number of pages (32 versus 68). The original, high-quality Viking editions placed text and illustrations in a layout that let the story breathe -- the amount of text on each page and the space within the drawings set the pace of the story. Well, Grosset & Dunlap "fixed" that: they hacked away at the illustrations (when they didn't omit them altogether) and then packed the text into whatever empty space they could find inside the illustrations themselves.

The result has the same relationship with the original as an orange peel has to an orange -- the color and shape remain, but all the juice has been squeezed out.

If you care at all about quality, find your kid a copy of the Viking edition instead. Borrow it from a library if you must. But stay far away from this edition unless-and-until the publisher fires the imbecile who decided to release this ersatz "classic" and brings back the original as it was meant to be read and enjoyed.

Abridged version...you're not getting a deal!

The story itself is a classic and for that it's great. But this is an abridged version, which is not at all clear when you go to buy it. That really irked me. You think you're getting a super deal at Four bucks, but you're not. You're getting half the pages.

Gentle natured Ferdinand shows you can go against "the norm" and still be quite content in just being who you are

One of my biggest joys during the seven years I spent babysitting our grandsons was sharing reading time with them. My daughter-in-law became a full-time-mom a year and a half ago so my opportunities to do it are now limited to visits and the occasional sleepover, but it doesn't mean we can't still contribute to the growing children's library in their own home! Having purchased a nice children's book case for them last Christmas, it's our intention to fill it with time-honored classics. I found "The Story of Ferdinand" among Amazon's list of "100 Children's Books to Read in a Lifetime", and am ashamed to say I had never heard of this book that's been around for 80 years now and was the #1 book in America - topping Gone with the Wind! - the year it was first published (1936).

Bullfighting is steeped in Hispanic identity in many parts of the world, considered more of a cultural event - a highly ritualized art form rather than a bloodsport. I must say that for me personally, though it's important to respect each culture's heritage, I would never have purchased a book about bullfighting - especially for our grandsons! But that is NOT what this book is about... as I read it, it is much more about resisting conforming to what's seen as the being the "norm" if it goes against who you are, regardless of what others say or do to provoke you or attempt to force you into submission. I'd read enough about the book to know that the majority of it centered around the peaceful nature of Ferdinand (only three pages reference what I consider the gruesome progression of torture a bull experiences in the ring - the Banderilleros with long sharp pins, the Picadores with long spears, and the Matador with his sword), with that innate peacefulness being what spares him.

With its completely black and white illustrations, this is certainly not a book most children will be used to, but - for the right age - a child who's ready to focus more on a story line versus needing lots of bright colors to hold his/her attention, the illustrations do a beautiful job of reflecting the gentleness of Ferdinand, who much prefers to "sit just quietly and smell the flowers" while the other bulls run and jump around, butting heads, and his wise mother who - though occasionally worried about him and what he may face by not conforming to the norm - understood that he was happy. When some men come to pick "the biggest, fastest, roughest bull" to fight in Madrid, Ferdinand accidentally sits on a bee, which of course stings him, and his resulting puffing, snorting, butting and pawing catches the eye of the men, who bring him to Madrid. But after entering the ring, Ferdinand simply runs to the middle of the ring and sits down, quite content to just enjoy the smell of the flowers in all of the female attendees' hair - most certainly not the type of bull they wanted for a fight, so they take Ferdinand back home... where "He is very happy."

The true message of the story is the power of peace, as I read it.

Some simple insights complicated by an obsessively detailed story

This book is for scholars of the anthropology of cognition only. It is heavily, heavily footnoted with many bibliographic references and links to sources that only a perfectly informed reader would ever need to know -- that perfectly informed reader being the author herself. The gist of the story is simple enough...much obsessively scholarly verbiage is wasted in telling that story

Respecifying Cognition
By Another Reader
Many readers are introduced to Jean Lave's work through Situated Learning (1991) with Etienne Wenger. However, readers interested in the genesis of Lave's two decade long effort to critique a reified understanding of cognition created in the narrow confines of a sterile experimental room by situating the study of learning within the everyday activities of social life may find Cognition in Practice (and also Everyday Cognition (1985) with Barbara Rogoff) insightful. Though the cognitive sciences themselves have moved on from the `information processing' or `transmission' model of learning that is an artifact of the experimental method and a 1960s fascination with the computer, this model of cognition remains endemic in formal educational today and particularly in educational policy decisions such as the No Child Left Behind Act that reveal a belief in the infallibility of science, so Lave's critique remains relevant today, two decades after the book was written.

However, Cognition in Practice aims not merely at critique but at developing a new framework for thinking about cognition - respecifying a `psychological theory of cognition' as an `anthropological' one - and the book is divided into two sections to address each. This endeavor of theory creation does make the book a cumbersome, though not difficult, read at times. The greatest challenge, Lave notes, is involved in depopulating reified meanings of the vocabulary of cognition that we no longer question and respecifying them in specific social/anthropological terms. Lave, in Cognition in Practice, makes the effort to address such dualities as theory/practice and mind/body, revaluing the latter concepts with respect to learning (cognition/learning is another such duality). Yes, two decades later, this is no longer groundbreaking.

Though Cognition in Practice is derived from anthropological ethnographic fieldwork and is therefore empirically-based criticism, it shares many of the goals if not the particular focus of literary critical theory. Indeed, in the two decades since the book was written, the lines have been blurred between what Gee (2000) identifies as more than 20 research programs within the great `social turn' in the social sciences and humanities, as ideas and methodologies have cross-populated within critical communities of practice - Gee's (1999) own "Big D" Discourse is Lave and Wenger's (1991) `Communities of Practice,' for example.

Cognition in Practice lays the groundwork for Situated Learning (1991), and though the latter is probably more familiar to readers and the concepts more refined (e.g. "whole persons acting in social worlds" becomes "legitimate peripheral participation"), readers interested in the cognitive basis for sociocultural theories of cognition that place learning as an activity located not exclusively in the brain but socially constructed in interaction with others and artifacts in everyday contexts will find Cognition in Practice useful.
