About the Author
Abe Shenitzer was born in Warsaw in 1921. He received his Ph.D. degree from New York University in 1954. He has taught at York University since 1969. He is the translator of Russian and German books and articles., and has served as the translator of two MAA books published in the Dolciani Mathematical Exposition series: Diophantus and Diophantine Equations, by Isabella Bashmakova, and The Beginnings and Evolution of Algebra by Isabella Bashmakova and Galina Smirnova. His abiding ambition is to present mathematics so that is seen to be what it is––an art.

John Stillwell was born in Melbourne Australia, and received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1970. He has taught at Monash University in Melbourne since 1970.. He has given sever invited addresses at conferences including the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1994, and the Joint Meetings of the MAA and AMS in 1998. His previous books are: Classical Topology and Combinatorial Group Theory, Mathematics and its History, Elements of Algebra, Numbers and Geometry, and Geometry of Surfaces.

About the Author
Gregory Pasternack is Chair of the Hydrologic Sciences Graduate Group and Professor of watershed hydrology and geomorphology in the Department of Land, Air, and Water Resources at the University of California at Davis. He holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University (1993), a M.S. from University of California at Berkeley (1994), and a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University (1998). Dr. Pasternack’s major research interest is the link between physical and biological processes in natural and human-altered aqueous environments. He has worked in rivers, wetlands, lakes, and estuaries. Dr. Pasternack has published over 60 refereed scientific papers. He is the recipient of awards from the State of Maryland and from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for bridging scientific research and community service. His teaching experience includes undergraduate and graduate courses in science and society, hydrology, and geomorphology.

The myth of risk management

This is an important book, the likes of which I have not seen before. My take-away is that there is a need in the business world to create an illusion that their risk management practices in place are sound and follow best practices, thus good risk governance exists (stakeholders are demanding this be demonstrated). That illusion once created allows the organization to go about their business with no ongoing pressure to further demonstrate they are deploying risk management practices (i.e., they are compliant). As opposed to the core principles for how to improve on existing risk management inherently manages company risks better (i.e., enterprise risk management). In fact, approaches to risk management to date can actually increase or create risks per this book. Because companies have for years been considering risks in the process of managing the business, the very recent effort to evolve risk management into a profession could be said to be coming from those who profit from offering risk management consulting services, the benefits of which are highly suspect, except again to be able to demonstrate practices are in place for compliance. Regulators get sucked up into the myth by themselves internally adopting the same risk frameworks they are evaluating in firms they regulate, and thus the risk framework becomes so embedded into the overall mindset, it is just assumed these best practices offer value.

My take away is that the nature of risk is such that the very recent labeling risk management as a profession is a myth with motives that are self-serving. The book goes into detail why risk management practices do not do what they purport to do, why risks cannot be managed like other disciplines can in management. Still, risk assessments can offer value, and as such a firm can learn how far to take their risk management practices before they should be concerned they are going through the motions, creating an illusion of managing risks. Tallib's book on the Black Swan compliments the theme of this book, which I would summarize is that the risk management profession is pulling the wool over a lot of eyes. Even if you disagree with the conclusion, the book would make anyone think through their assumptions, whether they are really managing something that inherently is so hard to manage.

A useful history of the move from risk analysis to risk management

This book has a useful part and a part whose use eludes me. I enjoyed Michael Power's history of how what used to be called risk analysis has been transmogrified, step-by-step, into risk management. However, the author also seems to not trust the basic goodness of ideas and feels the need to dress them up into academic jargon and neologisms and the oddest kind. Have you ever heard of or used the words scientificity or scientization? I didn't think so. I haven't either. And I am not a big fan of the European need to solve any and every problem with more regulation, bureaucracy, and experts to help you do without having to think or create.

Still, I think the author does identify a central issue quite well and the current global economic meltdown seems to make Professor Powers a bit of a prophet.

While the language of the book is too dense for the general reader, any businessperson who is interested in these topics should muscle their way through it whether or not you end up agreeing with the author's prescriptions.

An academic argument for transforming risk management to risk governance

Michael Power takes an academic look at how risk analysis has become risk management since the 1990s and how the present demand for greater business accountability is turning risk management into risk governance. The ideas in the book are solid, and not as opaque as Power's academic argot ("managerialization," "scientificity," "scientization") may make them seem. Constant explanations of detailed studies and risk models become somewhat complex for the general reader, but getAbstract recommends this informed and informative analysis to risk management professionals and professors who will appreciate Power's depth of knowledge.

Loshitzky (Univ. of East London, UK) here expands on her earlier fine work on cinema and politics: The Radical Faces of Godard and Bertolucci (CH, Sep'95, 33-0195) and Identity Politics on the Israeli Screen (CH, Jul'02, 39-6318). She works through contemporary European films that foreground migration, with the goal of describing each film's view of 'fortress Europe.' Loshitzky returns to Bernardo Bertolucci in Besieged (1998), while picking out Godardian elements in both Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine (1995) and Michael Winterbottom's 'Camp Trilogy' (In This World, Code 46, The Road to Guantanamo). She also discusses the Swiss film Journey of Hope (1990) and Stephen Frears's Dirty Pretty Things (2002). The range of films Loshitzky takes on is wide, but she makes no claim for comprehensiveness. She notes that she selects 'hegemonic' rather than 'minority discourse' films, i.e., films made by 'hosts' rather than 'strangers.' About the Author
Gertrude Chandler Warner was born on April 16, 1890, in Putnam, Connecticut. In 1918, Warner began teaching at Israel Putnam School. As a teacher, she discovered that many readers who liked an exciting story could not find books that were both easy and fun to read. She decided to try to meet this need. In 1942, The Boxcar Children was published for these readers.

Great for reluctant readers!

I originally checked this book out at the library because my son wouldn't read the "longer" original version of the Boxcar Children. The Boxcar Children graphic novels are great for reluctant readers. Don't expect a thick book. They are slim paperbacks for children who enjoy reading cartoons. We now own four subsequent Boxcar mysteries. These mysteries are a perfect alternative for struggling readers.

I think they should have posted that certain books are not suited for certain Kindle readers

Although the story itself is a 5 star read, I have always loved this story. and was looking forward to reading it to my granddaughter. the comic graphic doesn't fit or show up well on my Kindle reader. I think they should have posted that certain books are not suited for certain Kindle readers. As a result I have again purchased something I can no longer read or watch.

Try This One to Grow Interest in the Series

The first Boxcar Children Graphic Novel is written on the 2nd Grade level.

In 32 pages, it tells the story of the 4 Alden children -- Henry, Jessie, Benny and Violet -- who try to stay together after their parents die. There is a rich Grandfather in the background, but the children are afraid to trust him, so they try living doing odd jobs. There adventures lead them to an abandoned boxcar where they set up house. That is, until Violet becomes sick. Enter Grandfather to help save the day.

I think this would be a good book to add to a classroom, and if I had a reluctant reader I would surely check this out of the library to see if the addition of Mike Dubisch's nice artwork didn't push them along to read the book and get interested in the series.
