Good book for those seeking vicarious adventure

As an old sailor who has sailed mostly in Maine and the Virgin Islands and always in sight of land (except when the fog rolls in), I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book by Henry Holt, the story of his mostly solo circumnavigation of the world. I was amazed to think that someone nearly 70 years old, my age at the time of this adventure, would set off to sail around the world in a relatively small 35-foot sailboat – ALONE. Not only was there no comforting land in sight when things got rough for Mr. Holt, there was no mate to lend a helping hand and no one to talk with during the long days and nights.
The book is a delightful account of his travels from the Bahamas through the Panama Canal to the vast Pacific Ocean where a rogue wave threw him into a doorway with such force that it almost broke his back. He tells how he survived that mishap among many other dangerous encounters with fascinating detail and heartfelt affection for those who came to his rescue from time to time. As Mr. Holt took his time circumnavigating, the book is also full of his adventures on land in the many places he visited during his six-year post-retirement challenge. So apart from imparting a lot of his knowledge about sailing, Mr. Holt shares his experiences with the people in Tonga, for example, and what he learned of their daily lives. He obviously engaged in some hard research and includes lots of interesting facts about the islands and coastal communities where he would sometimes decide to spend a few weeks. His experience on the Aegean island of Santorini is a great example of that research – he uses that stop on his voyage to explain the best answer to the legend of the lost civilization of Atlantis.
The book is an excellent read for anyone who has any thoughts of venturing out on the open ocean alone with its emphasis on the importance of preparation and its frankness about the dangers. It is also an excellent read for those who simply enjoy adventure. My only criticism is that you never get to know and sympathize fully with the many different characters whom Mr. Holt met here and there and then again in different places and whom he introduces throughout the book. But then this is really a book about Henry Holt himself, although he speaks mostly of others. The book reveals a person who was so confident and with such a passion for exploration that you cannot help but admire and love him.

Good story, poor writing

This was an epic adventure by the author, however his mechanical engineering mind was poorly suited to write a book about it. The book reads more like a ships log than a story about a six year circumnavigation. From the continuous simple sentences to the disjointed thoughts moving from one topic to the next, often in the same paragraph or next sentence, it almost seemed like no one took the time to actually edit this book. The one thing I did like was the route the author took for his circumnavigation through the Red Sea, Suez Canal, and Mediterranean Sea. Fairly informative and unique compared to most who go south around cape hope. If you think like an engineer and love reading manuals written by them then you may like this book. Otherwise I could recommend many other circumnavigation books that are infinitely better.
