While Gaughen admits to having tampered with King Richard's time line in the author's note, she clearly explains how the tale's events and personages fit into their historical context. My favorite book so far in 2015

There is no possible way to express my utter joy and love for this series. I will be hunting down and collecting these books in hard copy for my personal library for sure!

I probably am a little bias because since a child I have always loved the story of Robin Hood, and outside of Beauty and the Beast, finding re-tellings of Robin Hood is one of my favorite hunts. This series was just as beautiful and action packed as one could have hoped for, and I will not be able to recommend it enough.

"For the longest time, no one really knew about me. I were Rob's secret, his informant, his shadow in dark places. They didn't see me, and I didn't mind that they didn't see."

In this conclusion to the series, Scarlet has changed, she is no longer hiding, but she is fighting for what she believes in; but first she had to realize that when she spoke, people stopped and listened. Lion Heart was so perfect in its conclusion, with plenty of Rob and Scar moments that made my heart so happy, but the action was not ignored either. Truly my favorite parts were of Rob and Scarlet though, Robin was written so perfectly with just the right amount of arrogance and humility, and their banter had me laughing out loud at times. The politics and action keep the story moving forward, and I found myself growing to like and get attached to new characters. I kind of didn't want this story to end. While reading, more than once I was afraid of the turn the book was making, but A.C. Gaughen does not disappoint!

I'm trying to think of a part of the book that maybe I wasn't thrilled with; a small point of criticism, but this is me honestly and truly gushing over a book. I just absolutely loved it.

Fantastic Ending to This Amazing Trilogy!

I'm not sure I have ever been this excited nor this nervous for an ending to a trilogy. This trilogy has been one of my most favorites from the word go and when you love something so much, it is hard not to pick up the last book with tons of emotion.

Can I just tell you how much I have missed these characters and how very much I loved this book, this last, so sad to see it end, book? Because I did. I loved it all. The detail, the history, the characters, the plot, the action, the sweet romance, the everything and I really am so sad that that was it but so happy with the way it all ended and came together.

Gaughan did such an amazing job with this whole series. Intricately integrating fiction with fact and creating a retelling that was both unique and entertaining.

Scarlet isn't your average heroine, nor is she your average thief. She is cunning, smart, beautiful, passionate, fierce, and willing to die to save those she loves and her country. Willing to fight for land, love, and freedom like so many from this era.

All of the characters were phenomenal and I loved every single minute of their interactions. So many scenes brought tears to my eyes and made me smile that it was crazy. I have come to love all these characters so much and it was so great seeing so many things, so many good things for once, happen to, and for, so many of them. None of them have had it easy and they have all lost someone so to see some happiness, finally, was just..amazing.

This truly is hands down one of my favorite YA historical reads out there. We need more like this in this genre because it really is a stand out series with beautiful writing and fabulous characters.

I'm so happy with the way this ended, even if not everyone got what they had coming to them, this ended on such a high that it was all worth it. I am so sad that I now have to say goodbye to this world and the people in it. I will sorely miss them all.

I only wish that there was an epilogue

I literally can't stop smiling over this book. It was just as amazingly written as the first two, the action was jut as awesome, and (my personal favorite) the romance was EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST TWO COMBINED! The only thing wrong with this holy grail of the series was that THERE IS NO EPILOGUE! I really want to know how the lives of the characters go on after the end of the book, and while the author's note at the end does say the gates of some of the characters, they were all minor characters that I was scratching my head trying to remember.
Other than that, it was PERFECTION!

About the Author
Michael Webb is a Los Angeles–based writer who has authored more than twenty books on architecture and design, most recently Modernist Paradise: Niemeyer House, Boyd Collection, and Venice, CA: Art + Architecture in a Maverick Community, while contributing essays to many more. He is also a regular contributor to leading journals in the United States and Europe. Growing up in London, he wrote for The Times and Country Life before moving to the US to direct film programs for the American Film Institute and curate a Smithsonian exhibition, Hollywood: Legend and Reality, which traveled to major American cities and Tokyo.

Dave Robinson was once a roadie to Jimi Hendrix. He also managed Brinsley Schwarz and was behind their ill-fated publicity stunt when he flew journalists to New York to see their gig at the Fillmore East. By 1974, he was managing the Hope & Anchor pub in Islington.



Jake Riviera had been road manager for Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers and later Dr Feelgood.



In1976, this maverick pair were to launch Stiff Records, supposedly on the back of a �400 loan from Lee Brilleaux of the Feelgoods. In fact, they never cashed the check.



The genius of Stiff was to take old pub rockers that they knew and turn them into new wave stars. Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe were all going nowhere until they were signed the label and reinvented. For a while, the major labels didn’t know how to respond to Stiff, particularly their brilliant marketing – coloured vinyl, different coloured sleeves for the completest market and their slogans, such as “If It Ain’t Stiff, It Ain’t Worth a fuck".



Riviera left the label in 1977 to form Radar Records and took Costello and Lowe with him



The label signed quirky acts such as Wreckless Eric, Devo, Rachel Sweet, Lene Lovich and more. Many of them were sent on package tours reminiscent of the Larry Parnes’ tours in the 1960s.



They also launched Stiff America to no little success.



Robinson signed Madness and The Pogues to the label before it went bankrupt in 1986. However, it re-launched in 2006 under new management and is still going strong.



Richard Balls has interviewed over 50 artists and Stiff staff to tell a story that is long overdue. Shane MacGowan, Lene Lovich, Chas Smash, Wreckless Eric and more tell what it was like to work for the world’s most outrageous record label.



Tony Judge, who runs the Be Stiff website has provided lots of rare photos along with badges and memorabilia to make this a celebration of a great record label.



Balls' other book on the life of Ian Dury sold a hefty 30,000 copies, so he has a following.

Richard Balls wrote Sex& Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll: The Life of Ian Dury for Omnibus in 2000. It sold over 30,000 copies and is still selling today. Richard is a publicity manager for Norwich City Council and lives in the city with his wife and two daughters. He is a passionate fan of Norwich City FC. He is the cousin of Ed Balls, Labour's Shadow Chancellor Of The Exchequer.

As ever with Stiff, money was tight. Jake did his sums and reckoned their prestigious date with Television would just about cover their trip to Los Angeles. But the artfully edgy New York band fronted by the charismatic Tom Verlaine, refused to have Stiff’s increasingly infamous punks on their bill. The snub was a bitter blow.



Rat says: “We went to see them and I remember Jake throwing a lot of abuse. ’Show us your tits!’ I think is was what he shouted. The tragic thing about it actually was that we really liked Television and Little Johnny Jewel was what everybody really talked about. That was the first punk single or one of them. They were something else and they gave punk an absolute musical credibility. But their attitude was so punk, because it was completely out there, with Little Johnny Jewel specifically. There is some good stuff on Marque Moon, but the kind of griminess that Richard Hell put on it just wasn’t there. It was like freeform jazz that made sense and it was kind of intellectual. And I was really pleased. ’Okay, I’m in a punk band and everyone’s saying punk bands are three chords. But these guys are really accomplished and you could put them on any stage anywhere‘. So when they said, ‘You can’t do it’, we were actually quite gutted. I know we got a bit spiteful about it. But that was one of the reasons we were a bit spiteful because we thought they’d be on our side. I doubt they’d even heard us. I think it was more our reputation preceding us and Tom Verlaine saying, ‘I’m not having a fucking freak show going on before me’.”

A few words from someone who was there...

I worked at Stiff for 5 wonderful & intense years and Richard Balls' book has described accurately the insanity, the hilarity, the fun and the hell it was to be a small part of the company's history. I'm biased because I know or knew 80% of the people mentioned in the book but - if you need an endorsement from someone who was there - here it is. A great read which brought back many happy memories and has rekindled a new bunch of nightmares!

BE STIFF !

I can dig it.
Ive read numerous books over the years on indie record labels but this is the first Ive read
that is solely on Stiff Records.
Besides the usual on the start up and early history we get a lot of pre- Stiff records background,
the personalities behind the label and the numerous musicians .
Its nice to read about Wreckless Eric, Kirsty MacColl, Jona Lewie among others for a change instead of the usual
focus on Elvis Costello, Madness and Nick Lowe. The author hit on what drew me to Stiff- in the 80's I head "Brilliant Mind" off the "Some Kind Of Wonderful" soundtrack and it sounded like an American indie band so I went researching into the band and then later the label.

A very good read indeed

A very good read indeed. Richard's Ian Dury biog was also a very enjoyable book, and this book is a must for anyone who loved the music that Stiff Records unleashed onto the nation in '76/'77. I am still the proud owner of BUY1 with "Plug Copy" stamped on the label. Stiff was a label as important as Chess and Motown in my opinion, and this book is an excellent reminder of their importance in the scheme of things.

PREFACE

Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education: A Biographical Introduction developed from my more than three decades of teaching the history and philosophy of education at Loyola University Chicago and as a visiting professor at Northern Michigan University, Otterbein College, and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Over time, the identification of the biographies and development of the chapters were stimulated by discussions with my students. The book reflects my belief that educational biography is a valuable, powerful, but too-often neglected medium for preparing teachers, administrators, and other professionals in education. I hope the book's third edition will continue to focus more attention on the use of educational biography in professional education programs. Organization and Coverage

As the book's title indicates, I have organized its contents around three broad themes: major movements in world history, the biographies of leading educators, and the philosophies and ideologies that came from their ideas. As a historian, I have been intrigued by the interaction of individuals in their historical contexts and how they create meaning from their transaction with the cultural situation of living at a given time and place.

As a teacher of the history of Western and American education, I decided to structure the book around the major movements in Western world history: the classical periods of ancient Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the Enlightenment, the age of revolution, the foundations of the United States, the Industrial Revolution, the rise of ideologies, the progressive movement, the end of imperialism in the postcolonial world, the rise of African American consciousness, and Marxism (as reflected in the Cultural Revolution of the People's Republic of China). This kind of periodization around broad historical currents helped me to construct a cognitive map on which I could locate people and events and give myself a perspective on the past. However, I also determined that this kind of periodization should not simply be chronological but should be enlivened by lives that represented the efforts, the trials and errors, and achievements of those who shaped the history and philosophy of education.

My interest in biography—the stories of lives—provided a means to give the great movements of human history a personal face. Biography enables us to see ourselves through the lives of others. For each of the great movements in history, I identified an important contributor to educational philosophy and method. For ancient Greece and Rome, there were Plato, the founder of idealism; Aristotle, the founder of realism; and Quintilian, an exemplary teacher of rhetoric. Medieval Christianity was epitomized by the great theologian Thomas Aquinas. Erasmus was the ideal representative of Renaissance humanism. John Calvin and Johann Amos Comenius represented two different ways of interpreting the educational changes produced by the Protestant Reformation. For the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment eras, the figures of lean-Jacques Rousseau and Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi stood out in bold relief. For the age of revolution and republicanism three persons7#151;Thomas Jefferson, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Horace Mann—were leading characters. Jefferson made the intellectual connection between the Enlightenment's rationalism and the republican impulse in North America. Mary Wollstonecraft undertook a revolution for women's rights. Horace Mann was a strong voice for creating public education for the new American republic. Educational responses to the Industrial and Darwinian revolutions came from such theorists as Robert Owen, a utopian socialist; John Stuart Mill, a liberal; and Herbert Spencer, a social Darwinist. Early twentieth-century progressivism is exemplified by Jane Addams, founder of Hull House, and John Dewey, America's leading Pragmatist philosopher. The rights of children were asserted by Friedrich Froebel, founder of the kindergarten, and Maria Montessori, who created her own version of early childhood education. The attack on colonialism came from Mohandas Gandhi, who won India's independence by nonviolent resistance. W E. B. Du Bois's commitment to equality of persons signaled a rising African American consciousness that would lead to pan-Africanism. The ideas of Karl Marx sparked the ready revolutionary activism of China's Mao Tse-tung.

At various times in my academic career, I have taught courses in philosophy of education. As I examined the lives of the great educators in their historical contexts, their views on philosophy of education—what constitutes the educated person—surfaced and came into perspective. I found that my students, too, gained deeper insights into philosophy of education by making connections with founding figures. For example, an examination of Plato's ideas leads to a consideration of philosophical idealism, Aristotle's ideas to realism, Thomas Aquinas to Thomism, Erasmus to humanism, Comenius to Pansophism, Rousseau to naturalism, and Dewey to Pragmatism.

I found that the lives and ideas of certain key figures provided students with an understanding of ideology and how ideology influences educational policy. Here, Robert Owen provides insights into utopianism, Mary Wollstonecraft into feminism, John Stuart Mill into liberalism, Herbert Spencer into social Darwinism, Jane Addams into progressivism, W E. B. Du Bois into pan-Africanism, and Mao into Marxism.

Although the various major historical, philosophical, and ideological currents are rich and complex, how the world's leading educators interacted with the context of their lives to create their own meanings of education cuts across this complexity. Because an individual's life is multifaceted, biography becomes a tool that provides a clear, interdisciplinary way to look at the development of educational ideas. Each educator treated leads us to a broader and more generous appreciation of our educational heritage, and often illuminates current challenges. Format

The book provides students with an interesting and personal but structured way to examine the historical and philosophical foundations of education. The first chapter examines how educational biography can be used in teacher and professional education programs. The following sections are included in each of the subsequent chapters:

The Historical Context that places the educational thinker in the historical, cultural, and philosophical situation of her or his time. A Biography of the educational thinker that analyzes the formative persons and events that shaped his or her educational philosophy or ideology. An Analysis of the Educational Thinker's Philosophy or Ideology that identifies the theorist's principal ideas about truth and value, education and schooling, and teaching and learning. A Conclusion that assesses the educational contributions and significance of the theorist. Discussion Questions, intended for in-class use, that relate the educational thinker to both her or his time in history and to the present situation in education. Research and Essay Topics that lead to analysis of trends and issues in the history, philosophy, and ideology of education. Suggestions for Further Reading that include both long-standing and recent books. Features

It is not easy to choose the major figures to treat in a book such as this. Every professor of history and philosophy of education has his or her own favorites. After consultation with professors who used the second edition, I determined to again feature the 22 theorists, philosophers, and educators who were treated in that edition. The second edition had been expanded by adding chapters examining the biographies and educational ideas of Aristotle, Johann Amos Comenius, Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill, and Mao Tse-tung. The third edition has been updated and the suggested readings revised to include recent publications in the field. In particular, the biographies of Thomas Aquinas, Erasmus, Horace Mann, Friedrich Froebel, Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Addams, and John Dewey have been expanded. The chapter on Horace Mann more clearly indicates how he was a major leader in creating the state and local governance partnership in American public education. I have revised the chapter on Jane Addams to reflect her pioneering multiculturalism. Dewey is more directly connected to the current revival of Pragmatism and liberalism. Du Bois is shown to have had a larger impact on general historical and sociological scholarship as well as on African American education. The chapter on Mao Tse-tung includes an expanded discussion of the Confucian heritage that Mao sought to eliminate in the People's Republic of China. Acknowledgements

My biographical and historical interests were developed by my graduate education at the University of Illinois in Urbana. Professors J. Leonard Bates, Arthur E. Bestor, Jr., and Norman Graebner were masters in developing for their students the importance of people in historical contexts. My study with Professor Harry Broudy emphasized that educators benefited from having a perspective on the development of educational ideas over time. The experimentalist theme of people interacting within their contexts owes much to the introduction to John Dewey that I received from William O. Stanley and Joe Burnett. It was Professor Anderson who encouraged me to write my first biography of an educator, my doctoral dissertation on George S. Counts.

Good text, both thorough and engaging

This is a well-researched and fascinating text on the history of education. My only complaint is with the chapter structure - Gutek locked himself into a format of describing each historical figure's major life experiences, then the historical context of his/her time, then the major contributions to education... in many cases, this got very repetitive and in a few cases it was almost self-contradicting. Overall a good introduction to the subject, though, and useful to any educator who has an interest in where certain practices originated and why.

Good Substance, some mistakes

The chapters are organized by person mainly instead of in chronological order, which I like. Each chapter is full of information the author fits a lot of information in small places. I'm finding some mis-spellings which I plan to notify the author of because with a well researched book like this, gramatical errors shouldn't be a distraction.

About the Author
Sara Levine is an assistant professor of biology at Wheelock College and a veterinarian. She holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from Lesley University and has taught writing and literature courses there as well. Her publications include mostly science-related essays for adults, one of which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2007. Her writing has appeared in the Health and Science section of the Boston Globe, The Massachusetts Review, Bayou, and in an anthology titled And Baby Makes More. In addition to teaching college level students, she has also been teaching children's environmental education classes for the Massachusetts Audubon Society and other nature centers in Massachusetts and Connecticut for over 15 years. Bone by Bone: Comparing Animal Skeletons is her first book for children.

Great interactive nonfiction read-aloud!

Summary: How many teeth do you have? What are the names and functions of different types of teeth? What kind of an animal would you be if you had really long incisors? Or teeth that were all the same? Tooth by Tooth draws readers right in with questions about something all of us are pretty familiar with—our teeth. Readers will learn which types of teeth are used by carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores, and why only mammals have different types of teeth. The last few pages include a glossary, additional resources, and more about mammals and their teeth. 32 pages; grades K-4.

Pros: The first book by this author/illustrator team, Bone by Bone is one of my favorite nonfiction read-alouds. The questions make both books very interactive, and the illustrations are lots of fun, showing what you would look like with different types of bones or teeth. Not only that, but there’s a ton of information packed into a short amount of text.

Cons: I didn’t find teeth quite as varied and interesting as bones.

Especially boys will love this

The first thing that caught my attention on this one was the cover--horrible, disgusting, creepy and totally what my sons would love to get their grubby little hands on.

One glance tells all. . .this book is about teeth. From human teeth to cow teeth to elephant tusks and everything beyond, the author takes the reader through the variety of chompers nature has to offer. The teeth types are broken down into groups (herbivores, omnivores, etc.) and each category is given a colorful 2 page spread. There's a description to the form of the teeth and their purpose, which was detailed enough to be informative but quick enough to keep the interest of even the most easily distracted reader.

This isn't a dull explanation book, but rather one that draws the reader in. Not only are the illustrations bright and full of humor, but each time a tooth type is introduced, the reader is asked if they know an animal which fits the description (possible answers are at the bottom of the correlating page). There's a picture of a skull to the side to help make the varying bone structures clear. The only thing which bothered me was that the skull didn't always match up to the animal in the illustration. For example, a horse would be illustrated but the skull was that of a cow.

Summed up, this is great for curious boys! It's slightly odd illustrations are perfect for luring boys in and the descriptions are educational and understandable. I can only recommend this for ages 4 to 8.

Humorous Informational Book about Teeth

TOOTH BY TOOTH: COMPARING FANGS, TUSKS, AND CHOMPERS by Sara Levine is a fun follow-up to the popular Bone by Bone.

This informational picture book designed for the primary grades introduces readers to the teeth of mammals. Taking a question-and-answer approach, children are asked to look at their own teeth, then think about the teeth of other creatures including dogs, cats, and bears.

T.S. Spookytooth’s illustrations add to the fun, but they also contribute to the high-quality learning experience.

Information about animal adaptations adds depth to the text. The book includes additional facts, a glossary, bibliography, and online resources.

Librarians will find the humorous approach will appeal to young readers who enjoy informational reading. Use this book as the focus of a dental health display that includes nonfiction works along with models of teeth.
