PMI’s Standard for Portfolio Management Third Edition is the first edition that is worth buying

PMI’s Standard for Portfolio Management Third Edition is the first edition that is worth buying. Having read the 1st and 2nd editions and reviewed the exposure draft for the 2nd and 3rd, PMI has come a long way with the third edition. Nearly all the major components of portfolio management are referenced in this edition (gate reviews being the most significant omission). At the time of this review, I am preparing for the PfMP exam and have read over most of the 3rd edition twice and have studied several sections in detail. It is still not perfect as there are several inconsistencies and items I consider too theoretical (hence the four-star rating), but overall it is a worthy addition to the portfolio management library.

Chapters 1-2 do a great job of giving an overview of portfolio management with the roles and responsibilities needed to make it work. Chapter 3 also does a pretty good job of creating a structure around which to organize the remaining chapters by setting each of the five knowledge areas (Portfolio Strategic Management, Portfolio Governance Management, Portfolio Performance Management, Portfolio Communication Management, and Portfolio Risk Management) in a table with the three process groups (Defining, Aligning, and Authorizing/Controlling). Chapters 4-5 in my opinion are the weakest parts in the book. There are some great additions such as the portfolio strategic plan and the portfolio roadmap, but some of the strategic processes seem out of order (e.g. prioritizing projects before they have been evaluated by a governance board) or are omitted (e.g. gate reviews). In addition, the Portfolio Charter deliverable is just too theoretical for most organizations to adopt. Chapter 6 does a good job of addressing resource capacity management and benefits realization (two big omissions in previous editions). I found chapter 7 to be very useful related to portfolio communication and I got fresh insight on portfolio risk management from chapter 8.

In short, the PMI Standard for Portfolio Management Third Edition is worth buying and offers great information for portfolio management practitioners.

If you have to read Robbin's, get this Pocket Companion!

Any med student knows Robbin's is like running into a 1,500 page brick wall over and over again to become the future Dr. House of the world. The pocket companion is perfect for finding key concepts and reviewing the day or 2 before exams. Cannot live without this Pocket Companion. It's going to get me through class, rotations, residency, and life as a doctor.

Handy to keep around

Reading the Pocket version helped me stomach the monster task of reading the "big" version. This pocket version has most of the details from the book, but not all. It was convenient to bring places - it really did fit into my shorts pockets! The authors intended to capture the wisecracking attitude of the Big Book, but fell well short. Too squeezed for space to include humor.

Good luck to all souls attempting a PBD course.

Ari Eastman writes what any girl (at any age) who's experienced love, heartbreak, or loss feels. Her words are eloquent, she is introspective and hit you in the feels every time. We all want to be strong and not feel the pain of vulnerability, she knows this too, and yet in reading her words (which feel like your own) you realize that being vulnerable is ok, being strong is ok, but most importantly feeling something, and being an imperfect something is more than ok. I read everything she writes, and watch her videos too, her energy is adorable, and at such a young age - she just gets it.

An amazing book

This book was a beautiful and enticing read that made me want to simultaneously laugh and cry and hug someone and curl up under a blanket and reminisce about my entire life. The author truly has a gift for words, and putting those words in an order that makes you feel something. Heartbreaking and liberating, reading through the sequence of these pieces was something I couldn't bring myself to walk away from.

Good book but needs a companion text

This is a very good case book, complete with intricate case studies illustrating numerous aspects of challenges often faced in restructuring in bankruptcy. However, the book assumes a level of knowledge about M&A concepts that many readers may not have. Consequently, I would recommend using this book in conjunction with another excellent text by DePamphilis entitled Mergers and Acquisitions: Integrated Approach. There are two editions. The second edition is more complete and up to date. It also tackles some of the problems illustrated in this book.

Valuable Reading for the Seasoned Professional and Novice

Having spent most of the last 20 years in the financial/corporate restructuring world, I have continued to search for useful and interesting literature on the subject. Having read many of Professor Gilson's prior published papers, combined with endorsements for the book from many of the "Deans" of the restructuring world, the "purchase decsion" was an easy one. I was not disappointed!
The book is useful and refreshing for restructuring industry participants at all levels from seasoned executives to novices. I have drawn on the concepts and problems outlined in a variety of situations, including brainstorming about particularly difficult issues concering client matters to assisting in the development of objectives for some of my firm's internal training materials.
I found the chapter on "Investing in Disressed Situations" combined with the two appendices on technical analyses (some of which I had previously read as journal papers) to be excellent summaries. These would prove useful to any reader and especially helpful to newer participants or students of financial restructuring.
Coporate Restructuring is designed as a case study text book. To some, including myself having received an MBA from the University of Chicago, this approach can be somewhat awkward. The advantage of the approach, especialy in restructuring, is that it does emulate the real world situation faced by turnaround/crisis management practitioners and investment bankers. The devolpment of the "theory" or "solution" is left to the reader. This is the correct approach since each restructuring case tends to be "unique and hand crafted"---"cook book" approaches can lead to incorrect answers and disastrous results for clients.
Coporate Restructuring is a "must read" for students of restructuring. It belongs in the library of all practitioners, principals and agents, in this area.

Absolutely a must read

This is an excellent book on understanding the framework used to analyze corporate restructurings and how corporate restructurings are playing an increasingly important role in creating shareholder value. Using recent case studies from various industries, Dr. Gilson effectively illustrates how companies restructure debt, contracts with shareholders, and contracts with employees. Topics such as Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, out-of-court restructurings, corporate spin-offs, equity carve-outs, tracking stocks, and layoffs are covered. The case study method is extremely helpful in providing the ever important management's viewpoint of the restructuring process. With input from executives, investment bankers, attorneys, investors, and other key participants, readers have access to the inside scoop of various transactions that is generally not available to the public. Based on my experience executing various "Corporate Clarity" transactions with the M&A group at J.P. Morgan, I can say Dr. Gilson has done a fantastic job explaining why companies restructure and how it impacts market valuation. This book is a must read for anyone seriously interested in understanding the rationale behind mergers and acquisitions from a strategic, financial, and legal perspective.

This is like an ordinary journal, but instead of writing all of your thoughts and feelings you are going to just write the things you are thankful for each day. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude has shown to be associated with several positive outcomes.

Here are a few of the many benefits of a keeping a gratitude journal:

Gratitude improves physical health. It is thought that those people who are more grateful have lesser aches and pains.

In addition to improving physical health, it improves physiological health. It’s like an antidote for negative emotions. It increases happiness and reduces depression. Just like spirituality, gratitude is also associated with well being.

It is also thought that it helps in reducing aggression. People who are more grateful show less antisocial behaviour and show more empathy to others.

People who are more grateful sleep better. Those spending a few minutes writing a gratitude journal everyday often feel more content in themselves and sleep better.

A study in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology” showed that soldiers showing more gratitude had reduced levels of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This shows that people with gratitude are able to cope better in life during stress.

A study reported by the University of Minnesota and the University of Florida showed that people writing a few lines of gratitude at the end of the day lowered their stress levels and they felt calmer at night.

Those writing a gratitude journal have more clarity about their lives and what they want and want to eliminate from their lives.

A recent study in the Spirituality in clinical practice (Wash D C) journal by Mills et al., showed that patients expressing more gratitude had lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers hence suggesting that gratitude could be a treatment for improving well being in heart failure patients.

How to maintain your gratitude journal:

Plan to write a few lines of gratitude every day preferably at night. But if can’t make it, don’t be too bogged down in writing every day, even every other day is fine.

Your gratitude journal does not have to be highly structured. To start off, you don’t have to be detailed, just a few lines of gratitude is enough.

Try to write about 5 things you are grateful for.

Thank you for buying this book. I hope your journey in keeping a gratitude journal would be a fruitful one. There was a time when I felt extremely bad about myself. There were constant negative thoughts in my head most of which were about money and low self esteem. I felt as if the whole world was better than me. I started comparing things with others which led to extreme sorrow in my life. But things changed when I started being thankful for what I had and I realised that I didn't have to compare anything with others and I was happy and a better person.

A moving story

This is a fast-paced read, with so many twists and turns. And there are many heart-wrenching events. You can’t help but feel everything the characters go through: hate, sibling animosity, parental neglect, love, selfishness, betrayal, abandonment and subjugation. Ordinary life when one is scarred by their past can be hard enough to deal with. When you have war and heartless, controlling military men thrown into the mix, it takes every fiber one owns to endure and survive . . . There are characters you love and those you’d love to hate. . . .This is a compelling book that keeps you engaged throughout your reading.
