5 Stars Guys? Really?

I've always depended on the reviews from fellow Amazon readers, and it's guided me to some great books I'd have otherwise not read. This, unfortunately, is one of those "how-the-hell-did-this-get-5-stars" situations that has driven me to write a review (something I would typically not do).

The story is relatively sound, and in the world of martial fantasy, certainly good enough for a casual read and peaked my interest. The writing, however, is largely terrible. Nightblade reads like a second draft rushed to publishing. The flow is constantly, consistently spoiled by repetitive language, repetitive paragraph structure, and some just downright ****y sentence structure. For example:

"The man lived and breathed swordsmanship because from the man's glances Orochi could tell he was about to ask about Orochi's blade"

That is a horrible sentence. It's awkward, garbled, and manages to use the name Orochi twice in short order. Likewise, there have been several instances of back-to-back paragraphs stating the same thing in slightly different ways. Use of the word "kingdom" in three consecutive sentences, the staggering amount of times the world "cycles" appears in this book, etc.

The potential is there, certainly, and I imagine I may enjoy the second book in the trilogy much more if I can bring myself to read it. I've only made it to about 80% of the way through Nightblade by aggressive skipping of paragraphs and pages when the writing gets under my skin. Perhaps I've just been spoiled by the likes of Will Wight, Jim Butcher, Pierce Brown, Robin Hobb and Scott Lynch (to name a few).

If you're not the type of person to be bothered those sorts of grammatical and structural issues, you'll probably really enjoy the book. If you're like me and find the experience easily ruined by clumsy turn of phrase, then skip this one. While I appreciate the enthusiasm of the book's fans, I have a very hard time understanding how this is a 5-star-near-perfect effort.

Dark, gripping and beautifully written

From the first chapter, this book was dark, gripping and beautifully written. Ryuu, a young boy, is orphaned in a tragic bandit attack, but is rescued by a strange warrior named Shigeru. Shigeru adopts Ryuu and raises him, training him in combat and to use "the sense." Meanwhile, there are two other concurrent storylines unfolding, as well. Takako is a beautiful young girl who is sold into a brothel by her father. Moriko is a bright young girl who is taken away from her family to be raised in an abbey when a monk discovers her ability to use "the sense." Eventually, the paths of the three will cross and the consequences of their actions will change their entire nation.
The author doesn't waste time world-building, but before you know it, you are swept up in the world of warriors, monks, courtesans and the dangerous "nightblades" and "dayblades" I love that Ryuu is such a believable character - he is young, impatient and can act just like a regular kid. At the same time, you can see him growing into a hero who is going to play a pivotal role in his world. I also really like that Moriko is such a strong female character and I can't wait to see what happens to her and Ryuu in the next book!

Very good, but not great

The book is set in Japanese-like fantasy world, where sensing(magic) is tightly controlled by nonreligious temples. This a coming of age assassins story with focus on character development and the author manages to create very believable characters with flaws, emotion and codes of honor.

My cons are:

The childhood of the character does suspend my belief due how adult they act. This resolves it self as they grow older.

For how much emphasis that is put on the fighting abilities of characters in book, the climatic fights are over very quickly and without much detail.

I am not at stickler for sentence structure and punctuation (English is my second language) and normally I don't even notice most mistakes, but there were a few times I had to reread part many times before I was clear on what the author was saying.

All in all a book I enjoyed reading but probably won't reread.
A really good choice if you enjoy a character driven story where the character have strong codes of honor

Jerk Store

If you're like George Castanza coming up with witty retorts long after the conversation has ended, this book is for you. I found myself literally laughing out loud over and over again, wishing I had some of these one-liners locked and loaded when I've been hit with liberal idiocy.

I love Kurt's style and his impressive grasp of wit and humor. I pity anyone who should ever face him in court, or anywhere requiring a battle of wits -- he's got game ...

For the price, this book goes a long ways, and I want to recommend it to my friends, but to be honest, it's a little too racy, especially at the end. Ignore the last chapter, and it 5 stars. And don't get me wrong, if this were a movie this wouldn't even get an "R" rating, but that's hardly a high standard.

Give me something I can share with my whole family, and I'll buy everything you write.

Awesomely funny short

If you're looking for awesomely funny jabs at the wussiness in our society, Kurt Schlicter's the man for the job. In this short book, he takes laser focus on wimps, hipsters, and all other drains on society, demanding they STFU and fetch the lattes of the real men in America.

Short, sweet liberal hipster butt-kicking. This is the stuff I think of 10 minutes after the conversation is over but Kurt can rapid fire his moron destroying barrage of white hot wit in seconds!

The man in her bed had a body built for giving pleasure, chiselled and polished to sinful perfection.

Melanie Sawyer hadn't sinned, perfect or otherwise, in far too long.

So she absorbed the gilded sheen of his skin in the early morning light, traced the wide plane of his back and the long furrow of his spine with hungry eyes. And down, to where the curve of a taut backside disappeared beneath her fluffy pink and tangerine throwover.

It wasn't only her eyes that were hungry. Her lips tingled and her fingers itched to explore the textures of skin and hair. That neat little earlobe, the sharp wedge of shoulder blade. But she only watched, entranced, not moving in case she woke him and spoiled the moment.

He murmured something in his sleep and rubbed his cheek against her pillow, the rasp of stubble sharp against crisp cotton. Her breath caught at the intimacy of his naked flesh sliding over her linen. He faced away from her so she couldn't see his features, but his dark hair was thick and tousled and utterly touchable.

A shame he wasn't awake.

A shame she wasn't in bed with him.

Adam's guy friends had slept over before. But not this particular one. And not in her bed.

With her gaze glued to the delicious sight, she unwound her scarf and set it on her suitcase beside her. Undid the top button of her suddenly too-tight sweater. Was the rest of him naked under that sheet? God, she hoped so. The thought made her blood pump faster, thicker, warming places that hadn't been warmed in a while. A long while. It had been five years since she'd had the pleasure of up close and horizontal.

She was a nurse, she'd seen more than her fair share of naked men, but the fact that this one was snuggled up with her pillow like temptation personified…well, her expectations were high.

Who was this guy anyway?

She glanced over her shoulder at the living-room destruction for any sign of a wallet or ID. Nope. Just a pile of action DVDs amongst greasy take-away containers and beer bottles—the drawback to having a male flatmate, she supposed, although, to be fair to Adam, she had come home from the conference a day earlier than expected.

A low rough-throated rumble from across the room rolled through her senses, drawing her attention back to her bed and its current occupant. With unapologetic interest—and, yeah, anticipation—she leaned against the doorjamb and watched him come to. Watched the sinewy forearms twist as his long fingers bunched and flexed around her pillow. Then he stretched, a lethargic shift and tensing of bone and muscle and golden skin, and rolled onto his back. everything inside her froze and fractured.

Luke Delaney.

No! Luke was an engineering geologist in Central Australia somewhere, not here in Sydney.

She saw the same shock register in his too-familiar mocha eyes as they locked gazes and she struggled to draw air. His lazy leonine posture vanished as he pushed up to a sitting position and ran a hand over his eyes as if he, too, was having trouble processing the information.

In that instant subtle changes snapped through her stunned brain. His body had grown firmer and more muscled over the past five years. His hair was shorter. The lines fanning out from his eyes were deeper. But his gorgeous mouth was the same.

Full with a tiny upward tilt at one corner, as if he were about to smile.

But he didn't smile. He swore—a soft short word beneath his breath before he said, 'Melanie.'

His voice reverberated through her bones, deeper, richer than she remembered—and she remembered very well. His velvet whispers in her ear, against her throat, on her breast. The way he murmured her name as he slid inside her.

He scrubbed at his face, then began shifting to the edge of the bed. 'When Adam said "Melanie"… Hell. I'm sorry. I should've grabbed the couch, but Adam said—'

'Stop!' She threw up a hand, hating the desperation she heard in her voice. Was he naked under there? God, she hoped not.

Once she'd have torn back the sheet herself and gloried in his hot, hard masculinity. Her horrified gaze shot back to his face. A more weathered face, but no less handsome. His complexion was a darker sun-stroked colour, but she felt none of that warm familiarity as he studied her through dark, impassive eyes.

One large bronzed hand curled around the edge of the sheet. 'It's okay, Mel,' he said at last. 'I'm decent.'

That was a matter for debate, she thought as he rose, giving her an eyeful of muscular torso covered only by a pair of black briefs, which did little to hide his impressive morning bulge…

Oh, dear God. She turned away, her face hot as wicked thoughts seared through her brain. At least he was out of her bed. 'When you're ready…' When you're covered.

She turned and headed back to the living room, grabbed the coffee plunger with its inch of black sludge and carried it to the kitchen. Some sort of conversation was inevitable and she needed a shot or three of caffeine first.

Where was Adam when she needed a buffer? His car was in the underground park next to hers, his bedroom door was shut. She drew in a breath as she dumped coffee into the plunger and savoured its steadying aroma.

She should've stayed in Canberra. Come home tonight like everyone else. Perhaps she'd have avoided this now inevitable reunion. The memories reared up and the secret she'd thought she'd buried turned over in her breast and throbbed to life again.

Luke continued to stare at the empty doorway after she'd gone. Melanie. His Melanie. Her imprint was still seared onto his eyeballs. Curves and colours—tight yellow sweater, a purple skirt above a tantalising flash of leg, knee-high furry beige boots tied up with laces… So Technicolor, so vibrant. So Mel.

Still the most beguiling woman he'd ever met.

And he'd spent the night in her bed.

His fingers clenched at his sides, tension gripped his gut. One look was all he needed to get the adrenaline pumping, his body tensing in anticipation. He remembered how it had been between them—hot, urgent, a fast-track ride to paradise. He'd always wondered how he'd react if he saw her again. Whether the old desires and needs lived up to the memory.

Now he knew, and the knowledge did nothing to reassure him. He forced his hands to uncurl, fought the impulse to leap up and follow the tempting sway of her hips beneath that skirt, the subtle fragrance of roses and vanilla she'd left drifting in the air.

Living with Adam Trent, for Pete's sake. He sucked in a breath. Adam had told him he shared with a nurse, but this nurse? He tried unsuccessfully to reconcile the Melanie he remembered with one in a starched white uniform and crepe-soled shoes.

Which didn't tell him squat about her personal life, Luke thought, grabbing his jeans from the floor. A glance around her room gave no hint. Only a tiny framed snapshot he'd not noticed on her dressing table last night—Mel and her sister, Carissa.

He studied it a moment. Yeah, still those same sultry lips and dark hair he'd fantasised about too often for his peace of mind. No men, then—at least none that rated a pictorial reminder. Relief pumped through Luke, instantly recognised and denied.

Whoa. He shook his head to clear the residual haze that had surrounded him since he'd woken to find that familiar pair of exotic grey eyes watching him. Her love life was none of his business. Her life was none of his business. Not since they'd gone their separate ways.

A glimmer of the emotion that had always accompanied her image spun through him like old gold. Part of him wanted to get the hell out, go home, crawl into bed again—his own bed—and put this whole morning into some sort of perspective. Another part wanted to stay, to rework that final scene from five years ago into something different, something that might have lasted.

But she hadn't wanted long-term.

He pulled on yesterday's sweater, and made a quick trip to the adjoining bathroom. The reflection in the mirror as he splashed his face with cold water reminded him he wasn't the guy Mel knew anymore either. What would they make of each other now? The band around his gut tightened and he leaned over the basin to eyeball himself. You don't want to know.

But one step into the living room, he came to a halt. She was holding a pot of steaming coffee, her buttercup top a stunning foil for the long sweep of coal-black hair, looking as fresh as an early spring daffodil. Quite simply, she took his breath away.

The colour in her cheeks flared a fragile peach as she met his gaze across the room. He'd seen the four seasons in those eyes and for a heartbeat he thought he saw a glint of summer joy behind the clouded depths before they dulled to a neutral stare.

Those eyes had haunted his dreams.

He couldn't linger because she tore her gaze away and crossed to the coffee-table. Her body still had the same concise curves and long, lean lines, the same tilt to her head that set her hair swinging as she set the coffee and mugs down. If she'd changed physically in any way it was only to radiate that inner beauty women seemed to gain as they matured.

His heart stalled in his chest and he had to swallow to ease the dry knot in his throat.

'Coffee?' Her eyes flicked down as she poured him a mug. 'Thanks.' Something strong and wet at least—'You still take sugar?'

'Yes.'

As he crossed the room to join her she leaned over to pour her own mug. The seductive curves of her breasts pressed intimately against her sweater as she straightened. Sensation burned in his blood, a punch of heat that left him breathless.

'So…' She lifted her mug, wrapped white-knuckled fingers around it and sank onto a faded brown couch as far away from him as she could get. 'What are you doing here?'

'Catching up with Adam.' Grip...

Very Slowly developed story- painful to read

This books' storyline was promising. Half way through the book saw no more progress for this couple. The h is just plain unbelievable with her "feelings" and "thoughts" and "secrets". I was screaming "tell him already". She was always thinking how he might feel not giving him a chance. I finished this book with pure will because it never captured me

Worship Is a Verb

Wheaton's Professor Robert E. Webber challengs us to rediscover and reemphasize worship, rooting it in the ancient liturgical wisdom of the Church. His presentation prompted me to re-read Webber's Worship Is a Verb (Waco: Word Books, c. 1985), a book designed "pri�marily as a study guide and tool for the implemen�tation of worship renewal" (p. 8). As the title suggests, Webber wants Christians to become participants in, not observers of, wor�ship services. Too much of our public wor�ship, he thinks, focuses on the pastor and his sermon. When pastors do everything--making an�nouncements, reading Scripture, praying the pas�toral prayer, preaching the sermon--the people become spectators. (Or, worse yet: fans!)
One of my students, who plans to enter the ministry, recently wrote a thoughtful essay, reflecting on his position paper on ministerial ethics. He asked how pastors avoid becoming "idols" in the minds of their people. (For many of us, I responded, there's no problem: we fail so regularly in the pulpit that no one's tempted to idolize us!) Yet, as I thought about it, there is a certain irony to the Protestant pulpit: having banished the crucifix and images from church, we often seek to install a "star" behind the pulpit! Everything in the Sunday services, as well as the weekly business routines of the institution, must focus on and revolve around the "senior pastor." So I think Webber's rightfully concerned. To really worship God in His holiness, entering into the mystery of His pre�sence, involves us in the "liturgy" (i.e. the "work") of confession, prayer, praise, communion. And above all it celebrates Jesus Christ.
Given the principle that "worship cele�brates Christ," Webber sets forth "this rule of thumb for worship: Worship tells and acts out the Christ-event. In this sense, the order of worship comes from above, not below." Worship should reflect the God who has spoken and incarnated himself. "Therefore, the twofold focus of worship is the Word (the Bible as the symbol of God speaking) and the Table (bread and wine as the symbol of God acting to save us)" (p. 49). This pattern, amply documented, comes from the earliest practices of the Christian Church. As ancient believers assembled together, they first prepared themselves for worship through hymns, invocations, confessions. Then they listened to the Word of God as biblical passages were read and expounded. (Webber rebukes evangelicals for read�ing so little Scripture and preaching so topi�cally! Such allows too many pastors to regularly ride favorite hobby-horses to death!) After the Word came the Table. Wherever be�lievers worshipped they came to the Table and con�sumed its bread and wine. Webber has "found the Table, like the Word, to be a satisfying means of nourishment and spiritual growth. Far from becom�ing routine, it has become like an intimate rela�tionship. For me, Communion is a personal ex�perience of Jesus Christ" (58).
Beyond building a case for more liturgi�cal-style worship, Webber gives suggestions as to how it can be implemented in evangelical congrega�tions. The basic worship pattern allows for con�temporary creative variations, including more ex�tensive use of the arts. Ways to elicit responses from the people--amens, alleluias, etc.--may be pre-pro�grammed but effective in encouraging everyone to par�ticipate in the service. He also encourages churches to seriously con�sider the traditional liturgical year's calendar of celebrations and scheduled readings. Rather than celebrate "secular" events, such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, and the Fourth of July, Webber calls us to recover the authentically Christian calendar, with its focus on Advent, Easter, and Pentecost.
Webber's personal journey from Fundamenta�lism (in�cluding a stint at Bob Jones University) to Anglicanism explains some of his enthusiasm for liturgy and worship. Yet anyone familiar with Church history knows he makes a bona fide point: to sustain the faith, on both a personal and cor�porate level, demands a style of worship which endures beyond those passing enthusiasms or power�ful preachers which may momentarily energize a congregation. There's wisdom to traditional ways, to tested and proven Body-life principles. So too there's wisdom to be gleaned from the pages of this book.

Worship renewal is about more than music

Robert Webber's book has already become a classic in worship circles. While most writers on the topic tend to focus on superficial issues like hymns vs. choruses, Webber engages the questions What is Christian worship? and How should it be practiced in the church? His eight principles can be applied beneficially in any style or setting of worship. If you're really interested in renewing your personal worship or your church's worship and not just changing style, read and think on this book. It will be well worth the effort.

In this book we can see Bob Webber beginning to explore some of the issues in worship that were to become his life work. He was concerned about the way pastors dominated worship and that many "worshipers" were little more than passive audience members. With this book Webber got the conversation started, but he refined his ideas more and more in his later books.
