When it appeared in 1998, Soucy's work received critical raves and was the first novel published in Quebec ever to be nominated for France's celebrated Prix Renaudot. Magic realist in tone, the novel chronicles the story of two brothers who grow up isolated from and largely ignorant of the world outside their father's massive estate, save for information gleaned from books and fairy tales. After their father dies, the boys must confront their surroundings, both familiar and unfamiliar; encounters with the inhabitants of the neighboring village rapidly and cruelly strip away their innocence. Occasionally, Soucy's colorful prose captivates, but more frequently the convoluted nature of the narrative befuddles and keeps the reader from following the course of events. A good deal of the writing is stilted and perplexing, as the narrator's frame of reference consists mainly of imagined objects and perspectives born solely of books, and therefore (understandably) divorced from reality. To be sure, such a style reflects Soucy's creativity and inventiveness, and his writing abounds with expressive flights of fancy. Unfortunately, the cumulative effect is to keep the reader at arm's length, and to weaken the force of Soucy's innovative storytelling.

They speak a language gleaned from the Bible, tales of chivalry, and Spinoza's Ethics, and live in their own odd world of superstition and (inescapably naive and incorrect) supposition. When they wake one day to find their father dead, the recorder of the tale or, as she calls herself, the "secretarious," ventures for the first time into the nearby village to purchase a coffin. Contact with the villagers speedily unravels the bizarre truth of her and her brother's existence, and they must choose between adapting to the horror of the real world or shutting out knowledge that contradicts every foundation on which they have built their lives. Told in the siblings' language and in their achingly limited point of view, Little Girl is a novel of suspense in which the tension creeps deliciously slowly over readers. If V. C. Andrews and capital-L Literature had a brainchild, this would be it. Simultaneously chilling and enchanting, this is a perfect choice for teens who prefer being scared intelligently and lastingly.

Reality is mutable and idiosyncratic in this nearly stream-of-consciousness narrative. Two children, one of them the narrator, find their father dead one morning, frozen in a strange position. They argue for a while, finally agreeing that one of them has to go to the village to buy a grave-box for Papa. The narrator makes the terrifying trek to the village, leaving the other to guard the body. Their subsequent encounter with the outside world, previously unknown to them, is a "mess of pronouns" that shatters the siblings' reality, which is founded upon chivalric romance and Spinoza's philosophy, and reveals something tortuous and awful. Offered from the viewpoint of someone living in a world almost unrecognizable to the outsider, the story is a riddle. Nevertheless, the enigmas of the text have a certain surreal beauty and are fantastic in their horror, which is not necessarily understood as such, except by the reader who realizes just how out-of-the-ordinary the life being reported is. The language in this story is poetic in the balance of simple and profound much like Alice, the main character who is deeply intelligent yet so naive. The details of her life slowly unfold and propel the story along. An amazing memoir of fictitious young lady and her reasoning away the darkness of her life. If you like stories of people in unusual situations them you will like this book.

the reader can be as confused as the characters and that's good.

auto-didacts on the grass, alas. what's fascinating about it for me is how the main characters explain the world to themselves with no instruction and the major plot points unfold slowly, there's no "oh I saw that coming" and Soucy doesn't play the "aha, surprise" card either. the reader can be as confused as the characters and that's good.

Nothing to say about this book. Difficult to get into it but knowing it was so short (137 pages) I wanted to finish. At the finish line, I decided it had been an interesting read - difficult to understand sometimes, and not sure of the outcome. But then I guess books don't need to always end with all the plots finished off. Not a book for all readers, for sure.

About the Author
MARTHA WARD was professor of Anthropology at the University of New Orleans for 42 years. Among other activities, she taught the first course in Women’s Studies and Gender in Louisiana.� She has survived the glass ceiling and academic politics, the Sexual Revolution, two marriages, Hurricane Katrina, and the intensities of motherhood ---among many similar experiences.� She has done fieldwork in and published her work in Micronesia, Tirol in the Austrian-Italian Alps, on the politics of reproduction in the United States, and on health care disparities for poor women.� The most recent project is a radical ethnographic and archival reconstruction of Voodoo in New Orleans, centering on the lives of its two famous practitioners, a mother and her daughter both named Marie Laveau.� Post-retirement she loves on her grandchildren and her looms where she weaves in honor of the work of women through time and space.
MONICA EDELSTEIN earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Tulane University in 2001. Her research includes an investigation of spirit possession practices among Ethiopian immigrants in Israel and gendered practices in Judaism. Before earning her Ph.D., she worked as a community organizer and AIDS and reproductive rights activist in Dallas and New Orleans. She has taught anthropology courses on gender, women, Africa, and Native North America for both Tulane and the University of New Orleans and works as an anthropology subject matter expert for Pearson’s textbook publications. She has collaborated on World Full of Women since the 4th edition.� She resides in New Orleans with her husband and two daughters.

Academic text or personal expression?

Though I enjoyed this book, I'm not sure most people are ready for Ward's obvious folding-in of her personal and political beliefs into this thorough work on the experiences of women.
Ward's writing on the work women do and on the wide variety of gender issues explained in the book is certainly interesting and edifying. However, her seemingly definitive pronouncements on political and social matters are at times given without explanation or evidence. In our changing world, some of the "truths" about male/female relationships in our society she takes as a matter of course are holding less and less water. Those familiar with issues in the anthropology of gender, while they may agree with her, will find places where evidence that supports her conclusions is amplified while that which doesn't is minimized or omitted.
Despite her conviction otherwise, I don't agree with her that it's possible to express one's personal opinion in such an otherwise academic context. Inevitably, one is cheapened by the other. That said, the book itself is quite interesting as a look into gender issues in anthropology and the viewpoints of both herself and other greats in the sub-field, like Mead & Benedict. Perhaps my wish though was simply for a more academically rigorous treatment.

Comprehensive!

I was assigned this text for my first women's studies course and I couldn't have been happier with the professor's decision. Reading it was easy and interesting. The language used is simple, to the point and keeps the reader's attention. The concepts discussed are relevant, current and worth learning more about. I stepped away from this book having gained a different world view.

Lots of references to the work of Elizabeth Barber and connections to fabric. For someone with a textile background it provides even more "click" moments. Easily readable and packed with information it is a must read for anyone interested in the fields of Women's Studies and Anthropology.

Very Poorly Done Considering Expectations

Some time ago I sat down and read through "Philosophy for Dummies" and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Philosophy." My intentions were to find a book that I might recommend to friends who have a passing interest in the subject, so that I might encourage their understanding and gain more people to discuss ideas with.

Not only was I disappointed with "Philosophy for Dummies" but I found the presentation to be both offensive and underhanded. While appearing at first to be an introduction to the greater subject, it turns out to be a packaging of the author's own beliefs... heavily skewed and full of personal bias. Whole movements are passed over with little or nothing said other than a dismissive comment from the author, who apparently doesnt think them worth mention because he doesnt agree. This is HARDLY proper for what is supposed to be an introduction to the subject. The novice reader is left with a lopsided, limited presentation that while written well enough, leaves him needing to go buy ANOTHER book so he can actually BE introduced to what this title led him to believe he would be -- the subject of philosophy in a wide ranging sense.

As for having the intention of demonstrating the "philosophical process," and not being a general introduction, it fails in this way too. In this regard, the book becomes a subjective promotion of the author's views with at best a biased and extremely limited dabble in opposing ideas (if at times any at all), these being presented in a shallow and shakey fashion, intentionally staged by the author so he can wave them away. ~Laughs~ very convenient, and in total contradiction to the spirit of philosophy and the "battle" of opposing views that has fostered and nurtured the strengths and greatness of the subject throughout history. The "philosophical process" involves the challenging of ones ideas, not the ignoring of that which you dont like or that which disagrees with you, just so you can say you are right and feel good about it.

In surfing Amazon tonight, I decided to look at the reviews for this book ("Philosophy for Dummies"). I was VERY glad to see that a number of people saw the same thing as I did in this.

Pro-God or not, is not the point. The glory of philosophy is found in all the different ideas it contains and the critical eyes objectively (hopefully) applied to them in evaluation. This is what an introduction should present (scope understandably limited to a degree), and most importantly should ENCOURAGE. A book like this should be written with the intention of exposing the reader to the subject of philosophy itself (the history and the general system of rational thought that is its foundation), not just the author's step by step program of -- "This is what I think, so I am going to show you why you should think this way too. Don't worry about the other stuff, it's just nonsense, so we won't say anything much about that."

"Complete Idiot's Guide to Philosophy" is a much better choice if we were to compare the two. It presents a wide variety of thoughts and explanations, leaving each person to think for himself and later search out more of what he finds speaks to him. The layout is well organized, and the progression of ideas fit well together, allowing the novice reader to not only see the varying concepts, but how each stage of thought fed into the next, and how differing theories challenge one another. The reader is exposed to the ideas themselves, as presented by the given philosophers, not as packaged by a single author who is spending less time introducing and more time selling his own views. Concepts are not examined in great detail, but then again, that is not what this book is trying to do.

While "Complete Idiot's Guide to Philosophy" is not the best introduction to the subject, it is a good, concise volume of work. As its intention was to be just that, it does its job well. There are better introductions available, but these are often much longer with ideas being developed in greater detail... something that while would be sought by a true student of the subject, might turn off those just looking for a surface exposure. The examinations are cursory at times, but this is again understandable considering the breadth of the subject in relation to the attempt to introduce as much as possible in a limited space, in simple terms.

Buy "Complete Idiot's Guide to Philosophy" if you want an introduction to the subject.
Buy "Philosophy for Dummies" if you want an introduction to Tom Morris.

Actually... check out "Thinking Through Philosophy" - Horner and Westacott - Cambridge University Press. The format and organization of this book is different from the two spoken of above, feeling less "rushed" though still concise and accessible... and the style of introduction is good for both casual readers and those seeking to later move into a deeper study.

Some philosophers may be offended that their subject has been included in this series, thinking it is too serious of too profound to be made accessible to the "Dummies" of the world. Fortunately, Tom Morris knows the difference between being serious and being somber, and the difference between being profound and being obscure. He has written a book which covers the serious stuff of philosophy but has done so in a way which is downright fun to read! This book does not shrink from the classic, and difficult, problems of philosophy such as the mind-body problem, the nature of freedom and its relation to determinism, the problem of evil, and the nature of morality. But all of this material is written in an engaging style which clearly lays out the issues involved and why they matter to us. Moreover, Morris takes on the really big questions which have traditionally motivated the whole philosophical enterprise: the existence of God, the meaning of life, and life after death. Morris discusses these existentially gripping issues in a clear and evenhanded manner which reminds us why these questions are at the very heart of our humanity. This book is not intended for professional philosophers, but as one who makes his living teaching the subject, I would heartily recommend it to anyone who wants to know what the fuss is all about which has generated the two thousand plus year old debate we call philosophy.

Don't Buy!

Man, I wish I had seen the other reviews prior to buying this book. I got several chapters into it and was extremely disappointed. So, I went online to see if there were comments about this and sure enough, there were. Many other comments mirror mine so I wont repeat. I too found the book to be offensive and underhanded. The author is clearly working in his belief system under the guise of philosophy. This book is not a neutral book on the subject. I will check out the other books and not finish this one. Will look into returning it to Amazon.

Over the past thirty-five plus years, Eugene has been involved in all aspects of the HVAC/R industry from field technician and system designer to company owner, teacher, administrator, consultant and author. Eugene is presently an Assistant Professor and lead faculty member for the HVAC/R program at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, New York. Eugene has twenty-three years of teaching experience and has taught HVAC at several institutions. Eugene earned his dual Bachelors Degree from The City College of New York and his Masters of Science degree from Stony Brook University, where he specialized in renewable and sustainable energy sources. He earned his Certified Master HVAC/R Educator (CMHE) credential from the ESCO Group. Eugene also carries the BEAP credential issued by ASHRAE, classifying him as a Building Energy Assessment Professional. Breathtaking

I don't even know where to start, but I'll start by cheering on Mrs Joyce for the marvelous job she has done for writing this book.. During the time I was reading my heart race to keep on reading to the end. This made me realize that I can wait on whatever God has plan for me in life, and the man I shall walk down the aisle to should be in his will. I enjoyed every minute and every second I got the chance to open the book. I can't wait to read Vol 2. I encourage every woman and man should read this because each and every one of us plays a character role in reality & how I sees it everyone that was listed in that book plays a role in my life right now.

I loved it!

This novel is more than just another romance/christian book. It is a great depiction of relationships good, bad or indifferent. At times, I forgot that these were just characters because their story was real life to me. I love how things weren't pretentious and overly-laden with religion. I truly feel that men and womenalike, especially couples could enjoy reading this book together as a benefit to strengthen their marriage and too communicate more effectively. I recommend this writing to singles looking to date and married couples to rekindle that fire. This is a spicy, on the edge drama-packed story, laced with controversy and surprises.

Ms. Stewart’s novel was an excellent read. As I drew closer to its end, I felt an overwhelming sadness: I did not want the novel to end. I wanted to read more about the relationships between the real-to-life characters. Stewart’s novel is more than a romance—it is a lesson for those who believe in spirituality, reminding them to wait on Spiritual guidance and promises. The novel is also a lesson for everyman and everywoman seeking a “happily ever after” relationship. I applaud this first novel by Ms. Stewart and cannot wait to read more from her.
