UFO Headquarters: Investigations On Current Extraterrestrial Activity In Area 51, by Susan Wright

The government said it need Area 51 to protect America. They said they needed it for research. Now some say it has all been a terrible lie...

In the annals of UFO controversies there has never been a place like this: sixty square miles of desert and scrub just north of Las Vegas, Nevada. Officially known as a U.S. Air Force testing ground, this area has accounted for more UFO sightings and more inexplicable activity than any other in the world. leading experts to dub Area 51 "Earth's unofficial UFO headquarters."

Now UFO writer Susan Wright seeks to answer the riddle once and for all, delving into previously secret government documents, drawing on eyewitness accounts, and ripping the veil of secrecy off Area 51 and the research that really goes on there. The result is the most shocking and thoroughly documented UFO book you have ever read, a book that demonstrates that for fifty years the U.S. government has had one overriding policy on Area 51: whenever confronted with suspicions, facts, or photographs-conceal, deny and lie...

its ok, probably more important when originally released
By Amazon Customer
First of all I purchased the Kindle edition. Let me say i had this book on my wish list for some time but it was only available as a hard copy, so I was waiting for a digital edition as I am looking to have all my future book buys in the digital realm. One reason i wanted this one is I am a fan of UFO Hunters and Susan Wright was a guest on the Area 51 episode.

Positives: The book is well written, I like her style of writing it flows well and is organized- a simple thing some of the more popular authors in the genre miss. The information is presented factually though not with a sledgehammer approach. She simply states what she has researched and uncovered. Wright properly references others and does not take credit for that which she did not find herself. In fact she is quick to point out, quite often, when her calls were not returned or the conversation with those contacted was short. Therein lies the problem which defeats the premise of the book...

Negatives: The title is misleading. The introduction gives a teaser into what will be covered and sounds like it will be a great read- everything you ever wanted to know about Area 51. Then it goes a bit off course and does not get back to Area 51 for about 70 pages, or about 1/4 of the book. The reason seems to be that very little new information has been found and thus the book reads like a compendium of all that which is out there. She provides a pretty long history of Roswell, some ancient sighting mentions, a little analysis of some key figures in the UFO world, etc. This is all information which is covered elsewhere, but in all honesty this book is a bit older (1999) and the information may have been "new" when published. I couldn't help but feel let down that this was more a history book than insightful dossier on 51.

I lost steam with the book and its rehashing, but cant say it has no value. It would be a worthwhile addition to the library for reference sake or maybe a more grounded jump on point for a new reader. While the whole topic of UFO's is debatable some of the books out there make the topic seem like a dwelling place for kooks. This book sounds scientific enough to not scare off new readers but is a little dated for those in the know.

Since 1996, JavaScript: The Definitive Guide has been the bible for JavaScript programmers—a programmer's guide and comprehensive reference to the core language and to the client-side JavaScript APIs defined by web browsers.

The 6th edition covers HTML5 and ECMAScript 5. Many chapters have been completely rewritten to bring them in line with today's best web development practices. New chapters in this edition document jQuery and server side JavaScript. It's recommended for experienced programmers who want to learn the programming language of the Web, and for current JavaScript programmers who want to master it.

"A must-have reference for expert JavaScript programmers...well-organized and detailed."
—Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript, CTO of Mozilla

"I made a career of what I learned from JavaScript: The Definitive Guide.”

From the Author
My 10 Favorite Examples from this Book
The 6th edition of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide includes 125 examples that you can view and download from from examples.oreilly.com/9780596805531/ or from github.com/davidflanagan/javascript6_examples
These are ten of my favorites from the book. Note that many of these use new features of ES5 or of HTML5, and will only work in the newest browsers:
1) Example 1-1 is is an extended example in the first chapter of the book, intended to show readers a simple but non-trivial example of JavaScript. This is the loan calculator example from the last edition, but made much more interesting with the addition of client-side graphics, localStorage, and Ajax.
2) Example 9-7 emulates Java-style enumerated types in JavaScript. It demonstrates that JavaScript's prototype-based inheritance is so flexible that factory methods can be normal object factories or even class factories. That example is a little clearer if you look at the code in Example 9-8.
3) Example 9-16 defines a class hierarchy of abstract and concrete Set classes. This one is a favorite because it involves data types and API design. Chapter 9 includes a number of other Set examples, too.
4) Example 9-23 demonstrates the ES5 Object.defineProperty() method and defines a convenient way to inspect and modify the attributes of the properties of an object. It may not be practical, but I think it is a beautiful hack.
5) Example 15-10 is a simple stream-like API wrapped around the innerHTML property of an element. When you're generating text (a table, for example) for display it is sometimes easier to pass each chunk that you compute to a write() method than it is to concatenate it all together and set it on innerHTML.
6) Example 21-03 is an analog clock implemented as an SVG graphic with scriptable hands. I love client-side graphics, and this is a favorite of mine because making the hands rotate is so simple with SVG transforms.
7) Example 21-06 draws a fractal Koch snowflake using the tag. I like it because it draws the same line over and over again, but uses transformations to make the line appear at different locations, orientations and sizes.
8) Example 21-13 is another graphical example: it draws sparklines (edwardtufte.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=0001OR). This one is a favorite just because sparklines are so cool.
9) Example 22-1 uses the HTML5 geolocation API to find out where you are then uses the Google Maps API to obtain a static map of your location. I like it because geolocation (via wifi networks) is just pure magic!
10) Example 22-15 is a long example that demonstrates the IndexedDB API. I like it because the idea of a client-side database in a web browser is crazy and cool. This one is really cutting-edge, but if you're running Firefox 4, you can try it out here: davidflanagan.com/demos/zipcodes.html

From the Back Cover
Since 1996, JavaScript: The Definitive Guide has been the bible for JavaScript programmers. With more than 500,000 copies in print, web developers are still raving about it:

  • "A must-have reference for expert JavaScript programmers...well-organized and detailed" -- Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript, CTO of Mozilla
  • "I made a career of what I learned from JavaScript:The Definitive Guide"--Andrew Hedges, Tapulous
  • "The Definitive Guide taught me JavaScript"--Tom Robinson, cofounder of 280 North, cocreator of Cappuccino
  • "I know which parts of JavaScript matter, based on how crinkled the spine of my copy of The Definitive Guide is in that section"--J. Chris Anderson, cofounder of CoucheBase, Apache CouchDB committer, and author of CouchDB:The Definitive Guide
  • "...an indispensable reference for all JavaScript developers. If there's something I need to know about JavaScript, I trust The Definitive Guide will have the right answer for me. It's that good."--Rey Bango, Microsoft Client-Web Community Program Manager and jQuery Team member.

For those doubting a book is better than what can be found online
By Charlie
I simply wanted to say how much David's book has meant to my learning and understanding of Javascript, and programming in general. I had initially tried learning through many free sources online, and while most were very good in tackling specific issues or illustrating solutions to esoteric problems, none gave me the confidence that I was getting a solid foundation in the language, or programming in general.

In search of something better, I looked to stackoverflow which constantly recommended David's book. To be honest, I pirated it first. But after the first 3 chapters I went straight to Amazon and bought it, as well as Javascript Patters from Stoyan and Douglas's Crockford book Javascript: the good parts (another big hit on the stackoverflow forums). I was dumbfounded at how easy and clear his book made the language. For the first time, ideas were presented in a logical order, with concepts obviously introduced to build on previous ones. Concepts I've been told are essential (hoisting, closures, etc) but were intimidating because I'd never seen them in a cohesive narrative, shocked me in how intuitive they actually were when written well and paired with succinct examples.

I know this all seems overzealous enough to border on the insincere, but for someone who always had a passion for technology and wanted to create his own, but was beginning to be deterred from it all because I thought it was simply above my grasp, I want to say thank you to David and O'Reilly.

They very may well have single-handedly created a new developer, and have dramatically changed my life in the process.

Thanks again.

Could be better
By Patrick Goetz
Readers should note that most of the reviews of this book refer to older editions which are -- due to the rapid evolution of javascript -- completely different books. I've spent a considerable amount of time the last few months reading the 6th edition of this book and have a number of complaints. But first, the kudos: this book is more comprehensive than any other javascript reference.

Complaints:
- the text is frequently non-linear in the sense that author will talk about undefined feature X, stating that feature X will be explained a couple of chapters later. Sometimes this is a good way to gradually introduce concepts, but it's used too much here. Some critics of this book have suggested you need to know javascript before reading this book, this might be why.

- Almost every concept is followed with the caveat "but this feature doesn't work in Internet Explorer prior to version Z. For that you have to use this entirely different function f". This makes the text unnecessarily confusing. How about talking about *standard* ECMAscript and relegating the caveats to end of chapter notes, perhaps adding a superscript to alert the reader about version incompatibilities?

- The examples are poor -- most show how to re-implement javascript 5 functions in javascript 3, or how to get a standard function to work in Internet Explorer 8. Who cares? This is why we have jQuery and Dojo -- in order not to worry about stuff like this. A few examples like this would provide welcome insight into dealing with compatibility issues, but in this case my eyes started to glaze over after a few hundred pages.

Case study: Chapter 17, "Handling Events". After reading much of this chapter I realized I didn't know anything about how to use events in actual, practical code. I went back to re-read the chapter, which starts on p. 445. The first example "snippet" doesn't occur until p. 457 and the first real example is on p. 466, demonstrating a "whenReady" function which shows you how "you can improve the startup time of your web applications if you trigger your scripts on events other than 'load'." Somewhat interesting, but is this really the best first example on event processing? The next example illustrates dragging an object, and is already quite complex and hard to follow.

The beginning of Ch. 17 tells us "An event object is an object that is associated with a particular event and contains details
about that event. Event objects are passed as an argument to the event handler function (except in IE8 and before where they are sometimes only available through the global variable event). All event objects have a type property that specifies the event type and
a target property that specifies the event target. (In IE8 and before, use srcElement instead of target.) Each event type defines a set of properties for its associated event." OK, how about an EXAMPLE illustrating how this works in real code? It's nearly impossible to get much out of this comment (and certainly impossible to retain anything) without an example. Only someone who already knows this stuff will follow that effectively, and if you already know the material, why read this chapter?

Additionally, some standard methods appear not to be documented in the client-side reference. Unfortunately I can't recall which ones at the moment; just remember looking for them and not finding them.

The "camel" book "Programming Perl" by Wall, Christiansen, and Orwant continues to be the gold standard for programming books by almost any measure, despite the fact that the current edition (3rd) is now terribly out of date. This book is readable, starts out with a good overview and then gradually dips the reader into the complexities of the language, included good examples, and frankly is an extremely enjoyable read. By comparison, this book meets none of these metrics. As a side note, O'Reilly (also the publisher of Programming Perl) used to be the dominant technical book publisher by huge margins, but in the past few years has begun to fall behind newer, more nimble competitors like Packt and Manning, who offer steep discounts on ebook editions and who appear to be taking greater care to maintain content quality. The affect is that at one time I would have simply assumed that the O'Reilly title was the highest quality text on any particular issue and now I'm finding this is not the case more often than not.

I must also add that I'm a fairly experienced programmer with some prior javascript experience; hence presumably a member of the target audience for this book. Whatever it's shortcomings and merits, and as other reviewers have pointed out, this book is COMPLETELY inappropriate for novice programmers and beginners. Stay far away, newbies, lest you burn in the pit of doom.

Provides a deep dive into JavaScript development
By James Skemp
JavaScript: The Definitive Guide is not just a complete reference of the language, like O'Reilly's other 'thick books,' but also provides a deep dive into JavaScript development. However, if you're just starting out and will be using one of the various libraries (like jQuery), this book may not (yet) be for you.

First, the sixth edition is the first I've read, so I can't speak to any changes. Instead, my review is focused on the book as a first-timer reader to the 'series.'

JavaScript: The Definitive Guide is broken up into four parts; Core JavaScript, Client-Side JavaScript, the Core JavaScript Reference, and the Client-Side Reference. If you've ever picked up one of O'Reilly's other reference books, like Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference, you know about what to expect from those last two parts - a deep reference to the language.

The first two parts, however, are a 'deep dive' into the actual language itself. Unlike a mere reference book, JavaScript: The Definitive Guide actually teaches you how to develop in JavaScript, starting at the core fundamentals, and working your way up to more advanced topics.

Part of the 'deep dive' aspect also includes following best practices, making numerous references to Douglas Crockford's JavaScript: The Good Parts throughout the first part of the book, which is about 30% of the book. Alone, the first part of the book provides an excellent, near-complete, tutorial on the language.

Historical information is also included, which I found to be very interesting when it came up, as well as implementation-specific functionality, that has limited use at this time (and as such, I personally found it distracting, and began skimming over later instances, but it's still nice that it's provided).

The second part focuses on the Web aspects, which is quite honestly where most people will be making use of JavaScript. This part covers about what you'd expect, as well as jQuery, client-side storage, and HTML5 functionality.

The jQuery information is around 60 pages of content, covers version 1.4, and also includes a bit about jQueryUI (a very little bit). It's quite refreshing to see jQuery included in the book, but as noted initially, if you're looking at focusing just on using a library, it may be better to get a resource focused on just that.

The second part is approximately 40% of the book.

The third and fourth parts are similar to O'Reilly's other reference books, and are therefore fairly detailed, with examples included. Depending upon your preference, you may find the reference valuable, or prefer searching online. The examples included give the book a slight advantage over the average Web site. Honestly, I generally prefer using online resources, so I don't see myself consulting these later parts very often, if at all.

Finally we come to the actual book itself. I received an electronic copy of the book, through the O'Reilly Blogger Review Program, so I can't speak to the quality of a physical copy. However, in the past I have generally found O'Reilly books to be well made, with bindings that last.

And now comes the rating.

After the first part of this book I was impressed by JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, and could easily have stopped there and been happy. The jQuery inclusion was a nice touch, which may be sufficient to push people who weren't thinking about using a library in their development to doing so, and may actually provide enough information for someone who wants to start learning JavaScript via jQuery. It is, in short, a true guide to JavaScript, and not just a reference book.

For these reasons, I must give JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 5 of 5 stars.

Elementary not masterful instructions
By Jerome D. Dolenz
I purchased this book in order to teach my mother. In 1997 during middle school years I took keyboarding class, which I excelled in. In that class we worked out of a hard cover blue spiral book. In that book there were pages of pages of drills that we had to work through in order to progress toward more keys. That is where this book was a disappointment to me.
One half of this book is dedicated to typing information and the back side discusses secondary topics, such as: LAN, landscape, leading, lowercase, pixel, semicolon use, and other grammar or computer terminology. The book even goes into DOS, how to format a floppy disk, copy a file using DOS copy command and even computer programming for example half of this book has code, such as:
if ( shift == 16) {
shift=1;
buffer1 = buffer (15-shift);
++shift;
This is unacceptable. I am considering returning this book now having worked on this review and seen how off track this book really gets. This book is suppose to be purely to master computer typing, and I would have use for more drills less how to write a letter or learn of programming languages. An important topic on finger position is fully detailed in four sentences. This is dismal. The book doesn't even include the basic tip of keeping your index finger planted to the when reaching for a distant key, for instance, the return key. How is this possible?
The last thing I'll decide to spend time to say that the overall physical quality reminds me of a homemade recipe book, being small in width and length. For example, the pages are uneven where they meet the spiral top; essentially some pages are physically longer than others. There are probably more things I could write, but I think you get the point. For the record, if the book made me in any way aware of the other material covered in it than it'd be no harm no foul, but just look at the title. Hopefully, I can get this thing returned.

Fascinating Read for Marketing
By Lisa Kay
I picked up this book not knowing anything about AR, and I found it not only fascinating, but also extremely helpful from a marketing perspective. Kipper and Rampolla's writing style is clean and easy to follow, while they cover a breadth of information that is not only appropriate for today, but which lays a groundwork for what's to come in the future. This book will be a continual reference for me as I make marketing decisions, and as I navigate the various developing technologies that are playing larger roles in our daily lives. I would recommend Kipper and Rampolla's book to anyone who wants to know more about AR - what it means and where it's going.

Augmented reality - Excellent
By K Howerton
This is an EXCELLENT book...as a person who must be up on the latest technologies this book I found in highly informational and something that I can use in everyday life. This book makes you think--as all books should about how we all can understand, benefit and use AR to push forward capabilities. I found it well worth the money, well written and edited and in enough detail that makes it truely "usable". This is a MUST read for anyone that needs to understand the linkages that technologies has with us all

Invaluable research tool
By "Gimpy" Peach Johnson
Anyone who collects old 78s knows how frustratingly difficult it can sometimes be to learn about the musicians responsible for making the recordings. This book spotlights dozens of acoustic-era (1890s-1920s) recording stars, in most cases providing the most complete and detailed biographies I've found anywhere. The introduction is particularly helpful, providing an overview of the recording industry in its early years, examining how recording limitations dictated what and who was recorded, offering glimpses into the studios where these records were made, and a valuable note about estimations of record sales. This introduction nicely balances the individual accounts that come after and helps us see how these musicians fit in the "overall picture." If you've got moldy stacks of old 78s by Arthur Fields, Irving Kaufman, Ada Jones, The Sannon Quartet, Joseph C. Smith, or others like that, you might just find yourself cleaning them off and playing them again after reading this book. I find these old acoustics are much easier to enjoy once I know something about the people who made them.

This isn't a sit-down-and-read-like-a-novel book, it's more like an encyclopedia, with 1-10 page articles about individual musicians and groups. At times, the articles feel a bit "choppy," but on the whole they are quite readable and there's plenty of information. Unfortunately, the binding of this paperback version is rather poor (the sheets are just glued directly to the flimsy spine, not sewn together), maybe the hardcover version is better bound? So far, my paperback is still intact, but for how much longer, I can only guess. This is a book I pull off the shelf often to answer many of the questions that come up when I listen to my 78s. Gracyk and Hoffman will give you a whole new appreciation for these old records! Highly recommended!

High rating, but beware...
By Porlock
...this book is definitely for the obsessive. These are pioneers who, for the most part, predate the concepts of stardom. Early recording companies, like early movie studios, were not interested in sharing any revenue with any "stars" that required promotion -- yes, Sarah Bernhardt made a movie or two, and Caruso sold a lot of records, but they were exceptions -- people who had reputations built outside the new mediums. For this reason, you'll find a lack of big-name stars. What you will find is a wealth of information on the practically unknown legions of men and women who were among the first to actually record the sounds and songs from the last two centuries. I found it fascinating, and of value in the obsessive cataloging that often goes hand-in-hand with the hobby of record collecting. It also helped to make a great many names a lot more human to me, and I'm thankful to the author for that. Not for the average reader, but if you have an interest in the acoustic recordings of popular music from the earliest days... well, you'll be as happy as Jones & Hare.

Nice reference work for collectors of early popular music
By Stephen Botts
This is a well written biographical dictionary of the key popular (vs. classical) performers featured on early recordings. For example, you can look up "Edison Quartette" and find out that it was also known as the Hayden Quartet and exchanged performers with the American Quartet. Then you can look up the individual singers. I just consulted it this morning to find out about an early recording of John Philip Sousa's band.

While it is not a discography, it has information about selected early records, along with a song index. If you want to get a peek at the style, check out Tim Gracyk's site online.

I don't see how any collector of early popular records could live without this book.

Amp'd: A Fathers Backstage Pass, by Gary Fincke

Set against a backdrop of aggressive rock, frenzied fans, moshing, stage diving, crowd surfing, security brutality, and occasional outright violence, Amp’d: A Father’s Backstage Pass follows four years in the life of Gary Fincke’s son, Aaron, a rock-and-roll guitarist. From bands such as Breaking Benjamin (signing with Hollywood Records and releasing CDs in 2002 and 2004), Strangers With Candy(winning MTV’s Ultimate Cover Band Prize in 2000), to Lifer (signing with Universal/Republic Records and releasing a national CD in 2001), Fincke gives a unique perspective to the bizarre and fantastical world of commercial rock and roll.
Aaron’s rock life is chronicled first-hand by his father, who attends more than fifty shows, spends time with the bands before and after shows, follows them to national tour sites, and talks intimately with his son as well as the members of the bands and some of their fans and managers. Amp’d emphasizes the character and life of the band members through the eyes of a widely published writer, college professor, and father who immerses himself in the high-adrenaline world of contemporary rock and roll. This is not only a page-turning first-hand account of a lifestyle about which many fantasize, but also a literary narrative that examines the larger issues of celebrity, success, and family.

Review
"Amp'd is a wild ride, father's blow-by-blow account of his son's sudden rise from gritty local clubs to the shark-and-groupie-infested waters of national stardom. Studded with revealing anecdotes and inside knowledge of the music business, Gary Fincke's highly readable memoir is a unique contribution to the literature of rock and roll."

One of the best Rock Books I've ever read
By Tim Brough
Your typical book about a rock band is a knock off and a turn off. Some hack writer grabs a stack of promotional blurble and interview pull-quotes together, then rushes a volume out. Often without even nominal assistance of the artist involved, these books are the equivalent of pulp junk food, aimed squarely at the fan for whom even a tiny scrap of information is like sugar. They are also usually dumped into the market place long after the band has become successful, so the quotes are practiced and edited as to present their topics in the best light (or not, depending on the author's agenda). We will also not discuss the fact that most of these books are thrown together by people that simply can't write to save their word processing arses.

Not so with "Amp'd." Dr. Gary Fincke is a Professor of English at a college in central Pennsylvania, a published poet, and story teller. He also loves rock with the passion of most adolescents. So when his guitarist son Aaron began playing guitar and being serious about it, Dad began writing about his kid the musician. As it turns out, Aaron is one of the lucky talents. His band, "Strangers With Candy," won a nationally televised MTV contest, morphed into Lifer and released Lifer. Like most bands in the music business world, they discover that getting a record out is not the key to the kingdom, but then Aaron joins Breaking Benjamin, and lightning struck twice. Breaking Benjamin got signed to Hollywood Records and now have three great rock albums out, "Saturate," "We Are Not Alone" and "Phobia."

Like most bands and musicians, Aaron finds himself being first a local star, then trying to climb the ladder to bigger things. The difference between "Amp'd" and other books about rock bands is there is a minimum of hyperbole involved. Dr Fincke watches from the sidelines as his son plays dive clubs, weird local festivals where I'm sure shouts of "Freebird!" were more to the norm than a bunch of young and aggressive year 2000 rockers would be, and venues that, as Senior Fincke describes them, have fewer sinks and toilets than his house. It's that kind of attention to detail that makes you really (and I know it's an overused phrase) feel like you're right their with him and the bands Aaron becomes involved in.

Perhaps the freshest thing about "Amp'd" is that it isn't an "insiders" view of the music industry, where people that have been working the same deals and scams for years on end try to act like they haven't already been there and done that. Nor is it a disconnected outsider doing emotionless research. It is obvious that Aaron loves making music and Dr. Fincke is equally fascinated by the process. Some of the book's best moments are when Dr Fincke tries to persuade his University colleagues to listen or watch some of Aaron's work, then describes their reactions. These range from mild enthusiasm to utter disdain.

There is also a strong message here in the amount of support that Dr. Fincke and his family invests in Aaron. Where most parents are probably yelling down to the basement to "turn it down," you'll discover that Aaron's family kicked in with money for T-shirts and early CD demos. "Amp'd" is a great read, a fine journal of the creative process and a testament to a family's willingness to let their children explore their creativity. Even if you don't like hard rock, you should be reading "Amp'd."

Amp'd - Amazing
By Ender
I'll be honest-I bought Amp'd solely to learn more about the roots of the band Breaking Benjamin, and member Aaron Fink. What I received, however, was much more. Gary Fincke delivers a captivating, suspenseful, and beautifully written story in Amp'd. Spanning from Aaron's high school band to 2003 Breaking Benjamin, Professor Fincke recounts his son's transformation as a musician and human being. Amp'd is filled with anecdotes that are sure to make you chuckle, and in some cases, experience a strangely authentic fearful sensation. Even though I am an avid Breaking Benjamin fan, Aaron's success did not seem assured throughout the story; I had serious trouble putting the book down.

To summarize, Amp'd is a powerful account of Aaron Fink's rise to stardom. Its captivating narrative is sure to engage any reader-fan of Breaking Benjamin or not. 5/5 for an amazing work of literature.

better left as a family journal?
By plastichallway
It is definitely an intriguing concept for a book: a rural PA father's account of his son's rock life as the son gets signed by a major label not once, but twice - and has two national CDs released within 8 months of each other. For a guy who is a professor of English and Creative Writing at Susquehanna Univ., the book is (strangely) not that well-written or compelling. There is hardly any time spent on how both of those bands got signed, the management and politics behind two major-label bands struggling to "make it," and he misspells Lynyrd Skynyrd and Isle of Q several times(!) As the dad, Gary seems to forget that unless you're a family member it's hard to follow who is who and most of his accounts are descriptions of the crowds and bouncers from the shows and surface-level conversations with his son. Although the book is billed truthfully as a father's observation of his son's life, it was frustrating that the book didn't provide more insight into the bands as they tried/try to navigate careers in the music business. Gary's "research" amounts to driving to shows and he pretty much admits that. It *is* interesting to see a dichotomy unfolding: Lifer's demise from outside forces to internal chaos and Breaking Benjamin's slow rise to success from inside out.

Having said all that, it's interesting reading for anybody in the NE PA and Lehigh Valley music scenes and for any young fan who wouldn't be distracted by the mediocre writing and who would salivate at this supposedly "intimate" look at their favorite band (Aaron is the handyman type! The band goes to media training!). I think BB is a great band and singer Ben Burnley is an excellent songwriter. He turns out to be the quirkiest, most-interesting person in the book. It's weird to read a book and know a number of the people and places.
