Really Engaging Story

I started reading this book while I was eating breakfast and next thing I know I am deep into Chapter 4. The only vampire I ever was interested in was the "Interview with a Vampire" movie, but this book is cleverly written. The characters get introduced subtly and all the sudden it's like you've known them forever. The main character relates how anyone would if they were buried alive, which is slightly predictable, but necessary if you were buried alive. There was a strange sense of "It's a wonderful life" with Aurora trying to discover what had happened to her along the way.

I am seriously considering getting the rest of this set as they are made available. That is so weird for me to say since I am not a vampire fan at all. This is just a really engaging story.

Run, run away as fast as you can. You want nothing to do with this book. It's horrible. The main character is a shallow, mindless, boy obsessed nitwit that is so uninteresting I barely managed to finish the book. If this had been the only problem I had with the book I probably would have shrugged it off as a weak YA, but it's not.

This book is flat...I mean FLAT. There is no emotional resonance or peak anywhere in it. Example: Aurora has just mysteriously risen from the grave. Does she freak out? Search for a reason? Show any evidence that she's been dead? Nope, she gets upset that the boy she liked is now dating her friend. A frightening vampire kidnaps her and informs her that he'd been told to kill her. Does she get mad or frightened? Nope, she worries about what to wear. She is told that her vampire friend was an admitted killer at one time. Does she get nervous? Nope, she's mad he didn't kiss her. A werewolf attacks and almost kills her. Does she get the shakes and go into shock? Nope, she has a makeup session.

There is just nothing realistic about Aurora's rising from the dead. Even down to the rising. Look at the cover of the book. See that dirty, grime incrusted hand? Yeah, she's supposed to have dug her way out of the grave. But when she gets to Henry's house, she and her pretty pale pink dress are clean. So clean, in fact, that she even chooses to wear it again. How did she manage that?

Time passes that isn't accounted for. Aurora pulls the cliche TSTL storm-out-and-get-lost-and-endangered shtick when angry. She makes no effort to figure out what happened to her. Assumptions are made and treated as fact (that she's a living dead girl, as opposed to a vampire, zombie, etc) based on nothing. The same belief is shared by several people with no sharing of information. People get stumbling, hiccuping drunk on three beers and seventeen year olds somehow manage to go on quick beer runs. She managed to go clothes shopping despite being dead for a year and having no discernible source of income or credit. The younger sister is horribly slut-shamed because her skirt is too short. There is the start of a love triangle. The book is from Aurora's 1st person POV for 25 chapters and then we randomly get a chapter from someone else's POV, before going back to her. (It's jarring.) The editing needs attention and the author uses ridiculous, contrived occurrences to artificially drag out reveals.

Basically, I found very little to enjoy here. I'll admit that the writing was fine, but the story is undeveloped, lacklustre and a time-waster. However, I read it because I'm doing a reading challenge in which the second book in this series factors, so I'm committed to at least the next book in the series before I can pretend I never read it. *sigh* I will persevere.

I practically flew through this book, surprisingly it was a pretty decent read. although the main plot seems original, there were some concepts that were predictable. if you are a fan of supernatural/human love stories...this wld probably be a good read for you.

About the Author
Joseph Barber Lightfoot (1828 1889), also known as J. B. Lightfoot, was an English theologian, preacher, canon of St Paul's Cathedral and bishop of Durham. His writings include essays on biblical and historical subject matter, commentaries on Pauline epistles and studies on the Apostolic Fathers as well as four posthumously published volumes of sermons. Lightfoot attended King Edward's School in Birmingham before attending Trinity College in Cambridge where he was elected a Fellow of his college. He became a tutor of Trinity College in 1857 and later a professor of divinity, editing theJournal of Classical and Sacred Philology from 1854 to 1859. In 1871, Lightfoot became canon of St. Paul's Cathedral, preaching regularly and participating in various ecclesiastical activities. He gained enormous popularity for his workEssays on the Work Entitled Supernatural Religion, a defense of the New Testament in response to Walter Richard Cassel's Supernatural Religion. In 1870, Lightfoot became Bishop of Durham, where he continued his theological study, writing, and preaching. Lightfoot wrote commentaries on Galatians, Philippians and Colossians and Philemon, and his newly discovered commentary notes on Acts, John, 2 Corinthians and 1 Peter are being published in the three-volume Lightfoot Legacy set.

This should be required reading in every seminary. In a modern era where such issues as heresy are either avoided or misconstrued, this text shines through to set the record straight. There are references here you will not find elsewhere. This was written when the Church was still the Church and understood the approaching philosophical milieu that the 20th century would bring. If you subscribe to the theories of those such as Bart Ehrmann, please read this for a sense of balance.

About the Author

James B. Murphy is Professor of Government at Dartmouth College, where he teaches courses in jurisprudence and political philosophy. His research interests include: Aristotle, jurisprudence, semiotics, political economy, and the philosophy of education. He has received grants and fellowships from the N.E.H., the A.C.L.S., the Earhart Foundation, The Manhattan Institute and the Pew Charitable Trusts. He previously authored The Moral Economy of Labor: Aristotelian Themes in Economic Theory and The Philosophy of Positive Law. He co-edited, with Richard O. Brooks, Aristotle and Modern Law (2003), Augustine and Modern Law (2011), and Aquinas and Modern Law (2013). He has also co-edited with Amanda Perreau-Saussine, The Nature of Customary Law (2007). He has published scholarly articles in Political Theory, The Review of Politics, The Review of Metaphysics, Semiotica, The Thomist, The American Journal of Jurisprudence,The American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, Revue Internationale de Philosophie, and Social Philosophy and Policy.

Waste of Money and Time

The book is impossible to follow and if you are looking for a textbook to teach rock blasting you will be very disappointed.
Frankly, I am not sure what kind of audience this book is intended for. This book is made of several loosely jointed papers and I should add that these are unfinished papers.

Higher Level Text book on Exolosive Engeneering

If you do not understand numeric modeling of explosive performance, basic trigonometric equations or algebraic examples within Detonation Modeling, it would be best to start with a book a bit less advanced. This text is somewhat similar to Detonation Modeling (Davis) & one needs SOME background in professional explosive workshops & symposiums to appreciate this book to the fullest. It is written for 3rd year Mining College students.
It's short comings are that it gives and introduction to quite a few items but goes into great depth on very few. However it DOES have well written notes so that the interested student can complete the introduction, into full length study very easily.
However it is one of the better PROFESSIONAL texts on EE & some of the contributor's are still teaching.
This book is NOT designed to learn how to blow over tree stumps. That bit of information is available in most workshops and courses in introductory mining college course work. This book is a well defined introduction to understanding how professional explosive engineers make decisions in the work arena, what resultant yields could be, & expectations of directional usage.
If you DO have a background or would like to truly professionalize your understanding of EE than this book is a great addition to any collection.
I bought this book for my uncle who wanted me to write this review - as the book is a professional textbook not the Anarchist's Cookbook.
It's thrust is to help a Journeyman engineer understand the critical decisions and techniques used in modern blasting. There ARE subject interjections of aluminized explosives and shaped charges but they are generally in context and not for the beginner. The book assumes the reader knows the basic concepts of EE and wants to explore numeric modeling and aspects such as less confined brisance vs focused energy. Generally, it is an excellent book for those who read and study subject-level material for more than a few days. It is designed for a classroom environment and lab.

heory and practice in one book

It starts with a good description of what are explosives (Chapter 3). I believe Chapters 1and 2 are useless for an experienced Rock Mechanics Engineer and the book is faulty under this aspect. These Chapters are unnecessary, because it seems that they were written with the intention of explaining the Fracture Mechanics and the Mechanics of Drilling but they fail completely in doing that. These are very complex fields and they cannot be comprehensively detailed in just a few pages.
Chapter 4 describes the theory behind shock waves and this Chapter is mandatory; it is also well written, in a way that it is pleasing to read. The remaining Chapters are both theoretical and practical and it must be highlighted that they provide a good background for the solutions of daily engineering problems, mainly for the specialists that are in the field trying to perform rock blasting correctly and economically.

Good, simple food ideas for toddlers

We liked this book because it's very basic about what you'll need to prepare the foods. All of the recipes are also simple to fix and aren't too complicated with ingredients. The foods are all healthy and come with a complete breakdown of how they are regarding to calories.

About the Author
Pastor Linda Gates is an author, an ordained minister, a Bible teacher, a Christian counselor and a translator. She translates German daily messages at daily-message.de into English and Afrikaans for the website. She was born and raised in Durban, South Africa after which she lived in Germany and England for nearly ten years during which time she completing two fiction writing diplomas, wrote short stories and a novel. Upon returning to South Africa she studied and completed a Diploma in Insolvency Law and Practice and worked in the legal and insolvency field. After taking early retirement she dedicated all her time to her Christian studies. She has qualified as a Minister of the Gospel and a Christian Counselor, completing a Certificate in Theology, a Bachelor Degree in Christian Counseling and an Honors Degree in Ministry. She has preached, taught Certificate and Diploma students and participated in mission outreach. After many years of intensive studies she has now written her first (of what she hopes to be many) non-fiction Christian book with which she hopes to reach and bring many people to salvation.

As an open-minded, enlightened agnostic, I found so much to challenge in this book. Having said that, and in my opinion, it is extremely well written and the author is clearly passionate about her subject and gives her own clear modern-day take on chosen passages from the Bible.
