This firsthand account of the discovery of DNA dispels a lot of the notions that ousiders have about how science really works. Watson's descriptions of the competition, politics, dead ends, personality clashes, mistakes, and eventually inspiration reveal that discovery is not as clear-cut a process as it sometimes might seem.
Watson is honest in his introduction that his account is just that, the story told through his own point of view, complete with possible faulty memories and personal prejudices. I was intrigued by the portrayals of the personalities of so many famous figures that I've been learning about for years in my biology and genetics classes - Francis Crick, of course, along with Maurice Wilikins, Rosalind Franklin, Linus Pauling, and many more. I was touched by Watson's admission at the end of the book that his unfavorable impressions of Rosalind Franklin stemmed from the fact that she was a woman trying to make a name for herself in the male-dominated world of scientific research in the 1950s.
There is quite a bit of biological jargon in this book, and though it could probably be read by someone without any knowledge of genetics, it will be appreciated more by readers with some background. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in genetics and science.

About the Author

Alain Corbin is a French historian and specialist of nineteenth-century France. His publications include Women for Hire: Prostitution and Sexuality in France After 1850; The Foul and the Fragrant: Odor and the French Social Imagination; Village Bells; and The Life of an Unknown.

Jean-Jacques Courtine is professor of European studies at the University of Auckland, and professor emeritus at the Sorbonne nouvelle (Paris III) and the University of California, Santa Barbara. With Alain Corbin and Georges Vigarello, he edited Histoire du corps (History of the Body). His publications include Histoire du visage (History of the Face) and D�chiffrer le corps. Penser avec Foucault (Deciphering the Body. Thinking with Foucault).

Georges Vigarello is one of Europe's best-known historians of the body. He has published prolifically on topics ranging from Concepts of Cleanliness and the cultural history of sports to The History of Rape and The History of the Body. He is research director at the �cole des hautes etudes en sciences sociales (EHESS), and the author, most recently, of The Metamorphoses of Fat: A History of Obesity.

An Amazon purchase - and I love it!

Three great novels in one big book. Morning Glory is one of the best love stories I have ever read. It would be a great basis for a movie. It is about a down in the luck good looking man (with a bad past) who answers an ad for a husand from a down in the luck widow who is considered by the town as crazy. It is set in the early 1900s. They are both wnderful people and the story is magic. Vows is also excellent, I was able to connect to all the characters - they were very engaging and likable people. It is set in the 1800s and is about a young woman who is tomboy. She helps run the livery stable and is studying to be a vet. She is torn by her feelings for two men, and I don't blame her. I love them both too. There is a secondary love story about her father, an honorable man who is torn between two women. Both of the women are likeable also,in totally different ways. I am still reading The Gamble and so far it is just as good as the vows. It is set after the Civil War and during the temperance era. The main female character is lovable. She is a miliner who was hurt as a child by her drunk father and has a limp. Her shop is in the same building as the new saloon, purchased by a georgeous southern gentleman/gambler. Sparks fly, especially when the "dancing" girls arrive in town. The author, Spencer, has a true talent for story telling. The passion between lovers is very good but not too graphic (just sexy enough without making the reader gringe). I highly recommend all three novels contained in this big hardback book. I bought this book used. It came with the book jacket and is in excellent condition.

Three great stories

I loved this book! All three stories were great. THE HELLION was heart breaking, Rachel's father was so domineering and caused people 20 years of unhappiness. SEPARATE BEDS was the most interesting to me, I thought it took Clay a long time to figure out what is really important to make a good marriage, that similar life styles and backgrounds are not it. Catherine had to learn that she was a good person, how to show love and except the fact that she was loveable. I really liked the humor that was in HUMMINGBIRD, and what a man Jesse was! Abigail was so "up-tight", it was such fun to see Jesse make her loose her control. But in the end, it was Jesse that had to admit she had got to him too.

This author is an amazing writer. I was so sad when she retired. I have read every book she has ever written. Hummingbird is my favorite novel ever. I have probably read it 20 times and each time I fall more in love with the story. A great buy!

I have a friend who has not dated for quite a long time after a failed relationship. I heard online dating works fine and I've been convincing her to give it a try but she keeps on ignoring the thought. Got this book for her, btw. Anyway, I read the contents myself and it seems sound and legit. I loaned it to her a few days back and said she'd finally give it a try with the tips in this book in mind. Well, it looks like it's working as she's getting a lot of responses from guys and they seem to be good guys. I just hope they're not psychopaths or something. Hope this ends well for her. Kudos to the author. The tips worked.

The Top 40 sound broke through racial barriers, galvanized coming-of-age kids (and scandalized their perplexed parents), and provided the insistent, inescapable backbeat for times that were a-changin’.

Along with rock-and-roll music came the attitude that would literally change the “voice” of radio forever, via the likes of raconteur Jean Shepherd, who captivated his loyal following of “Night People”; the inimitable Bob Fass, whose groundbreaking Radio Unnameable inaugurated the anything-goes free-form style that would come to define the alternative frontier of FM; and a small-time Top 40 deejay who would ultimately find national fame as a political talk-show host named Rush Limbaugh.

Beautifully written history of radio

Fisher beautifully recaps the history of radio, from pioneer all-night storytellers like Jean Shepherd to crazies like Wolfman Jack, from stars like Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh to small-town DJ's -- and he never forgets about the little things that made radio special. It's hard to describe the atmosphere and nostalgia that fills this book -- the chapter on Jean Shepherd was enough to win me over. Beautifully written, filled with great memories and solid period information. You'll wonder how a media as unique and powerful as this devolved into the same old mush we have today -- and Fisher provides some insight in that area.

First few chapters superb

Well-written, and the first few chapters provide as good a history of Top 40 format beginnings as you will find. It's tipped toward Todd Storz and away from Gordon McLendon, but other sources head in the other direction, and so this is good balance. As the book continues, it becomes more of a grab-bag, but it is never less than enjoyable.

Good read for radio history

I would not have read this book but I purchased it for a class project. It is very good for someone interested in the history of radio. I enjoyed it. I gave it to a student and bought this one for my home library.
