great stuff, but ...

This guy is really good. I've read a couple of his books, and have always been impressed how much wisdom and honesty there are in them.

This book strikes me as particularly realistic. Instead of the typical pablum about teamwork, growth, etc., he really lays it on the line. Let's face it: the typical organization is rather dysfunctional, politics are big, not everybody you meet has it all together, you have to play the game, it's not what you know ... all that good stuff.

His basic thrust is that this is reality. You can stew about it, you can complain about it, you can worry about it, but none of that really changes anything. So, if you want to do something about it, you have to basically start with yourself. You have to determine what you can do (and very little of that involves the full frontal assault that is so tempting to the disgruntled) and go ahead and actually do it. At the same time, you also have to keep in mind that there are a ton of things you simply cannot change.

The advice seems really spot-on. My guess is it comes, not from speculating about what might or should be, but from lots and lots of talking with real people on the couch.

On the other hand, I'm giving this only 4 stars because it seemed to be perhaps a little TOO realistic. At points, I got a feeling that he was simply telling me to just suck it up - or to just grow up. He also very straightforwardly says to suck up and to be a bit of a phony.

I think there's a lot of truth to these, but would have appreciated a little more selling on his part, maybe a little more nuance. I know a lot of these things are true, but it doesn't make me like them any more. How do I deal with that dissonance?

In addition, my 25 years experience in the real world tells me that not all companies are the same. I've been at some total turkeys and at some really great ones. My personal advice would be, if you're at a turkey, to suck it up until you can move on to that better company. Perhaps listening to people on the couch all day gave Dr. Bernstein a rather *jaundiced* view of reality. ;^)

One final strength of this book is the writing style. It's short, sweet, to the point, structured (i.e., lots of lists and short, targeted sections), and also uses humor and stories very tellingly.

I'm reading it again and again.

I feel empowered and smart after reading, Am I the only SANE ONE working here? Dr. Albert Bernstein offers practical solutions to everyday problems in the workplace. The solutions include guidance on how I can make the change happen without expectation of others changing first. I recall following the survival solutions for defusing anger and had immediate results because my actions changed the other person's response. The book is well written, easy to understand, and memorable. It is the kind of book you will want to reference when issues arise. I was amazed at how this author could come up with something so useful. It's a must read for anyone who wants to understand how to survive and even thrive in the workplace. Kate Kelley

Practical solutions

We all want to be right. The other books try to help you convince other people that you are. Just say this and your problem is solved. Unfortunately, your coworkers didn't read that book so they don't react the way the book said they would.

You cannot change other people. It's rare that you can change situations that other people have control over. This book pounds home the fact that you can only change your reaction to the situations and people you encounter.

It's not enough to just know that fact. Knowing it's true and making it work are 2 different things. Solutions are explained in such a way that you can use them. You aren't dependent on how the other people acting or reacting. It's up to you and what you are willing to let go... really let go.

You behave based on what will help you achieve your own goals not on your emotions. And sometimes you just have to suck it up. This situation can't be changed because you are not in charge. Deal with it or leave.

This is the first of two Tanner's Ford books set in 1988, featuring great-grandchildren of those in the Bride Train series. Times have changed, but life in the valley holds many of the same characteristics. A highway came through in the 1970s, bypassing the town and creating a shiny new one, named Climax.

Men are still demanding and commanding, and their women still stand up to them. It's common for two men to share a wife, especially on the original 9 ranches. The MacDougal twins, Simon and Lance, are stuck with the same dilemma as in 1871 -- without a son, their ranch may pass to the Texas branch of the family.� They've pretty much given up on finding a woman until Simon breaks his leg and gets a full-leg cast. Unable to work or take care of himself, he needs a keeper.

As with many families, some members insist on "helping" their relatives. Brenda Gibson Anderson, head nurse at the Climax medical clinic, eagerly helps arrange for visitor Marci Meshevski to enjoy her new widowhood after too many years with a controlling, nasty excuse of a man. Since Simon needs help to get in and out of bed and more, and Nikki wants to discover all about the advantages of a� good man or two, why not hook them up together?

The fictional town of Tanner's Ford is located in a valley running from northwest downhill to southeast, with the town to the east. The setting is based on Montana's Big Hole Valley.
Tanner's Ford Valley, north of the river, west to east:
The Bitterroot Ranch (using the RB brand) is run by Ranger Elliott, his twin Ben, and younger brother, Patrick. Florence is Ben's wife (A Convenient Husband, Bride Train #4).
The Rocking E is one of the two original ranches, established in the late 1840s. Trace Elliott married Beth, and shares the ranch with his younger twin brothers, Simon and Jack (Barefoot Bride for Three, Bride Train #1).
The Circle C ranch is owned by a trio of battered veterans, Luke Frost, Gabe Downey, and Oscar (Oz) Cutler. Luke marries Sarah in Beauty and the Beasts, Bride Train #6.
The last ranch on the north with the Flying X brand, known as the Sweetwater Ranch, is owned by Cole Taylor, Byron Ashcroft, and Marshall Stevens, three� bachelors from the South. In Southern Seduction, Bride Train #8, they get more than they expected when they hire a cook.
Pinkerton agents Max, Sam, and Joshua Gibson purchase a ranch east of town with Sophie McLeod

The MD Connected was the second original ranch, also established in the late 1840s. Gillis MacDougal is the ramrod and shares the ranch with his two half-brothers, Ross and Nevin. Amelia married Ross in A Contract Bride's Triple Surprise, Bride Train #2.
Kenrick (Ace) Langford, Charles (Sin) Statham, and Henry Bennett are English aristocrats who won the Double D ranch from fellow Englishman Frederick Smythe in a card game. Jessie Elliott married Ace in Compromised Cowgirl, Bride Train #3.
Cousins Jed Adams, Riley Jansen, and Clint Fortune own the J Bar C (J-C). Jed married Victoria twice in 1 Bed, 2 Weddings, 3 Husbands, Bride Train #5.
Walt Chamberlain owned the Running W ranch, but in The Badger City Gang, Bride Train #7, he gifts it to Zach, Dusty, and Roy McInnes after Zach insists on marrying Kate Mason, the woman he took from the bride train. The McInnes men then discover she is Walt's daughter.
To the east of town, on the road to Bannack City, is a ranch which was owned by Mayor Orville Rivers, shot by the twelve-year-old boy Casey Wright in The Badger City Gang.

I had my doubts starting this book. I loved all of the other books in this series so I decided to chance it. So glad I did and can not wait for some more. The men are still just as hot and demanding of their women.

Marci escaped a bad marriage when her husband perished in a house fire, leaving her a widow, and she went to live with her sister, the only family she had left. Simon's full leg cast and Marci's sister's idea to put her bad marriage behind her, see her moving in with Simon while he needs the extra help, at least until his brother Lance returns. Each of the characters have multiple things going on here and it was woven together so nicely. I liked the amount of trust Marci but in Simon and Lance, nearly from the beginning. Lance's spiritual connection with Simon, his ravens and Marci was awesome and I really thought it deepened his character. I look forward to more stories from this series!

Take a woman who has been denied a lot of things in her life and set her up with a man in a full leg cast and what do you get? A lot of fun! Marci is starting to live after losing everything in a fire, including an abusive husband! Simon and his twin Lance are looking for a wife – they are in desperate need of a son so that they don’t lose ownership of their ranch thanks to an ancestor. Put the three of them together and things just might work out.

I loved how Marci wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted. She was denied so many things when she was married; I was surprised that she was able to voice those needs. Simon and his personality won her over though…that and his family with roots, which is what Marci is really wanting. Their dynamic together…in and out of the bedroom or kitchen table…kept me reading just one more page! Lance is the more dominant brother and he sure did let Marci know it as soon as he walked into the house. Their dynamic is different but I really enjoyed it, was actually wishing for more of the two of them!

A very good book, one that you don’t necessarily need to read the previous series to understand, which is fantastic. However, now I need to finish reading this series then I want to go back and read the Bride Train series…just cause!

Rotter, a professor of history at Colgate (The Path to Vietnam), proposes to restructure the debate over the atomic bombing of Japan by putting the subject in a global context. His detailed analysis of Japanese reactions to Hiroshima and Nagasaki draws a commonsense conclusion: the nuclear strikes combined with Soviet intervention gave Emperor Hirohito the opening he needed to end a war clearly lost. America alone, however, did not decide to build the bomb; leading scientists in other countries worked on embryonic atomic bomb projects. Nor were Americans alone in considering the bomb's use. In Britain, Germany and Japan, false starts, scarce resources and wartime exigencies limited results. Rotter nevertheless concludes that any other power would have dropped a developed bomb with no more hesitation than the U.S. Ironically, the superpowers' mutual efforts to step away from the abyss in later years were accompanied by increasing and successful efforts by others to join the nuclear club: Britain, France, Israel, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea. The atomic bomb is now the world's bomb—as political, cultural and religious contexts increasingly deny that genuine noncombatants exist. Good book on a continually interesting topic

This book provides an overview of the decision to drop the atomic bomb, the points of view and scientific development that led to the decision, and the post-WWII development of atomic weapons, presented country by country. Given this broad scope, the detail that can be provided is to a degree limited, but nevertheless sufficient, given the goals of the book. The author implies that the bombs were an atrocity in general, but well-explains why the decision makers at the time were more or less compelled to go ahead and drop the bombs. The later-day revisionism, critical of the bombs, is basically avoided; indeed, many of the arguments against the bombs are set aside, based on the facts. A good read on the topic.

Rehash of Old Arguments

The title of this book is somewhat misleading as it covers far more ground than simply an account of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The book traces the development of the A-bomb (though at a high level, and the reader interested in this subject would be far better off reading "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes). Alongside this the author lays out the parallel development of strategic bombing and the degeneration of morals on all sides as a result of the brutalities of the World War, both of which contributed to the climate in which the decision to use the weapon was made. The actual description of the events at Hiroshima takes up very little space as the author moves on to describe (again at a high level) the subsequent proliferation of nuclear weapons almost to the present day.

The book adopts a clear moral stance as regards the bombing, and while hedging somewhat, it is clear the author does not believe the bombings were a necessary part of winning the war against Japan. The decision to use the bomb is presented as almost inevitable with few of those involved expressing any serious moral reservations at the time. Furthermore, the author appears to believe, the bombings were far more a geopolitical statement to the Soviet Union rather than a military step to defeat Japan.

Unfortunately the book offers little new on the subject other than the idea that the bomb was the "world's bomb". This idea is based on the multi-national nature of the scientists that developed the theory and practical usage of the nuclear weapon and on the moral climate that made its use feasible. These are thin arguments at best. While the theoretical developments in early 20th century physics were certainly spread across the international scientific community, the Manhatten Project, despite critical contributions from the British and European scientists, was very much an American endeavor. More importantly, the decision to use the weapon was entirely an American one. As to the moral climate of the times, few if any, of the leaders of the Allied or Axis powers would have demurred from using the bomb had it been available to them, and a majority of their populations would have supported that decision. But this does not constitute a basis for calling it the "world's bomb". In all honesty the bomb was clearly an American Bomb with all that entails.

As for the history of the bomb and the associated physics this is better described in Rhodes' excellent book, the history of air power and the war in general can be found in specialist works covering those domains, and the arguments for and against the use of the bomb are well known to anyone familiar with 20th century history.

If you are unfamiliar with this subject matter then the book is a good overview. If you are familiar with the subject then this work will likely add little to your knowledge.

This is one volume in an interesting series from Oxford UP. It is a very, very good book, but be warned: this is not an easy read. It is aimed at the educated reader, and shades over into moral philosophy in wartime. It offers a detailed account of the conception and development of the weapon, and decisions related to targeting. This is more a political and policy history of the weapon than detail on engineering, recruiting personnel and so on.

An example of the kind of moral discussion is this. Quite deadly poison gas was available to all sides in the war, but no one used it. Rotter argues that the use of poison gas horrifies the world because it kills from inside a body, and that nuclear weapons are more acceptable. No, his explanation of that is not very clear.

The author is quite certain that it would have been used on the Germans had the bomb been available before the German surrender. He also argues that its use was inevitable because the huge resources devoted to it required a justification. This, Rotter argues, was perhaps more important in the decision to drop it than saving lives by shortening the war or to keep the Soviets out of Japan.

Ant�nio Miguel Rosado da Cruz is Invited Adjunct Professor in the Polytechnical Institute of Viana do Castelo. He has a PhD in Informatics Engineering from University of Porto. Has several works published, mainly in the areas of Software Engineering, Model-driven Development, Model Transformation, Software Modeling, Code Generation, User Interface Modeling, Formal Methods, Cloud computing and Metamodels.

Sara Paiva has a PhD in Computer Engineering and has been a teacher at the School of Technology and Management for 10 years. For several years now she is dedicated to the mobile development field (Android and iOS), both for lecturing and research purposes. She has more than 20 publications in journals and conferences and has participated in several research projects. She also accumulates responsibilities as Course Coordinator and as a member of several course committees. Finally, she has a background in the area of neuro-linguistic programming and coaching.
