Judgement in the Ashes

This well written book continues to chronicle the dispicable affairs of a nation that has purged itself of common sense and filled it's leaders (Washington liberals) heads with the notion that everything is just fine with the economy. That America no longer needs stern disipline for education and for the criminal element. Then to open it's borders to any and all and allow them access to everything without earning it that American workers have labored and sacrificed for only to be taken away in the name of goodwill. The entire Ashes series is well worth the time for all Americans to read and comtemplate on for we are seeing the theme of this series come to pass in America today.

If you want to enjoy a well written, short story this is for you. However there is a catch!
This book is well toward the end of a series and you will very likely get caught up in the action and adventure.

Mr. Johnstone has done it again. He never fails to bring you in immediately and keep you! I just wish we could get the whole Ashes series on Kindle!!! These books are too close for comfort.....better learn how to shoot and have some survival skills! Yay for Amazon and their strive for excellence!

Intersting take on growing old

Interesting. Actually a fairly short read (I normally read at night before bed and finished this in one sitting so one can easily reread this), my wife bought this for me after we read a review in the WSJ. It contains the Latin text first and then the English Translation. Overall given the reviews I was underwhelmed (not that anything Cicero said was offensive or bad just very ordinary). While certainly worth reading you might be better off using the library on this one. I read the kindle version and it was fine, no technical issues. One final sidelight, Cicero talks about a lot of Roman historical figures (some relatively minor) and their actions about 200 to 250 years in the past (from his writing). I wonder how many of today's college graduates would know of even the major characters from US history in the time of say the French and Indian War through the War of 1812, perhaps most and I have a bad sample

While much of this can be found in various self help publications, Cicero did not steal the good advice from todays publications

He died thousands of years before these books came out. But, the fact that we have thousands of years being reminded about the basic sameness of the human condition, soul and experience is well worth remembering. Cicero's thoughts are an eternal part of us and have certainly been known for as long as we have human. Reading Cicero should remind us that we are all human and have been struggling with the vicissitudes of life for as long as humanity has existed and will continue that struggle until humanity no longer exists.

that in better times would have signaled the start of retirement

As I'm hitting a milestone birthday this week, that in better times would have signaled the start of retirement, I'm glad that I had purchased this little volume and taken the time to read it. Virtually everything in the text is pertinent--and in much more eloquent prose than is available in all of the twaddle that passes for advice for those aging on the internet (or elsewhere).

Philip Freeman's translation is very easy reading, and I found myself having a difficult time putting it down. Having the Latin on the facing page is an excellent idea! I recall (vaguely) trying to read Cicero's Catiline Orations in 3rd year high school Latin (tentative grip on the ablative and past pluperfect subjunctive in hand) and thinking that was really needed was an excellent translation where I wouldn't have to simultaneously keep two books open to the right pages. This would have done quite nicely! Seeing and trying to recall how to pronounce the words on the left page was a significant part of the fun of reading this book.

Over fifty years ago I thoroughly enjoyed all things Greek & Roman. Bulfinch, Ovid, & Hamilton were my favorite writers. This book has taken me back and given me the idea that perhaps I should relearn Latin when/if I retire. It was the subject that gave me my greatest joy in high school. An active inquisitive mind, Cicero says, is important to aging well. A new old language sounds like a plan! (I've also started reclaiming my garden from the brier patch to take another of his suggestions, albeit on a smaller scale).

In the age of sound bites and tweets, Cicero may at first seem too, well . . . ancient. That acknowledged, I would highly recommend this book. After all, none of us is getting younger, and the youngest of us could prosper as well from the small investment required to read it. Given the vivid translation and the original author, it provides several cuts above the quality of advice in AARP outlets!

It's ok...if you've never read a book by Dr. Haha Lung you'll probably like it.

He rehashes a lot of old material. This book is basically a rewriting of all the other book titles under Dr. Haha lung. And there's this disturbing amount of seduction stuff in it. (yawn, eyeroll) Which makes me wonder...who IS this Dr. Haha Lung? Hrm. You never know.

I guess if you never knew how to masturbate, he tells you.

All his books are really tongue in cheek. If you take the books too seriously, then your not paying close enough attention to what your reading. It's cool though, he's an interesting author anyways. I just thought this book was boring because it was basically a rehash, but that's because I've read all the other books by him. I really should know better by now. And honestly, if he publishes another book, the rehash thing is not going to stop me from buying it.

About the Author
Robert W. Strayer (PhD, University of Wisconsin) taught African, Soviet, and world history for many years at SUNY College at Brockport, where he received Chancellor s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1998 he was visiting professor of world and Soviet history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since 2002, he has taught world history at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Monterey Bay; and Cabrillo College. His scholarship includes work in African history ("Kenya: Focus on Nationalism, " 1975; "The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa," 1978); Soviet history ("Why Did the Soviet Union Collapse?, "1998; "The Communist Experiment," 2007) and World History ("The Making of the Modern World," 1988, 1995; "Ways of the World," 2009, 2011). He is a long-time member of the World History Association and served on its Executive Committee."

Good content but bad delivery

I know it's a textbook for a college-level class, but its just a revised online edition. Which means that the cost of making this textbook and its digital value are far lower than the price. Furthermore, it turns out I don't need the book anymore and I can't return it. The content itself is good and concise, but I couldn't even get the LearningCurve app or MacMillan license, which I thought I would.

ore Enjoyable than Most, Accurate and Comprehensive Coverage, Some Features Missing

It's hard to make a history textbook interesting. While non-textbook, non-fiction history books tend to be liked by history lovers, even such people tend to dislike the textbooks of history. The same can not be said of the majority of, say, mathematics textbooks. Still, this textbook covers plenty of material in a pretty easy to read way. The material is also nicer to read than volume 2. The content could be slightly more to the point, but doing so would likely make it too terse to retain for most. All in all, it has a fairly unbiased coverage, is well written, and is edited quite thoroughly to reflect new evidence and to minimize errors. The emphasis on source analysis and the development rather than outcome of history is great.

I would prefer to see more information on the writing of history, good research skills, and connections to other fields. This is really the only obvious con aside from the issue of, despite beating most, being a bit on the dull side. If you can get into it though, say 10 pages of reading, the rest becomes quite enjoyable.

Aesthetically, the paper is great. The only downfall is that it will, as usual, bend a bit.

Overall: 8.5/10, with points being docked for the lack of features only.

Very touching and emotional stories, they are realistic with a powerful meaning of life. It's rare to find a well written book, expecially for people who are approaching English and need to read understandable but not banal books. It is an interesting lecture for everyone, I strongly recommend this book wheter you are a native English or not.

Heartily endorsed by humans, vampires, ogres, trolls, and werewolves alike.

This is a very well written paranormal novel with a decidedly comedic turn. Not what you'd normally expect when reading about the journey of a vampire and a werewolf. And let's not forget Bumache, the assassin that is chasing them. By the way, the name Bumache foreshadows a number of butt references but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

This is also a very practical book since it includes a host of tips on traveling. For example, you should stay in Troll-run hotels due to their exceptional hospitality and attention to detail. And the book even comes with a coupon for using Ogre-powered bicycle tours. Neat, huh?

This book by John Logsdon and Christopher Young reminds me of the middle novels in the Myth Adventures series by Robert Lynn Asprin. The pointed references to slightly renamed companies and individuals like Microsoft, Apple, and Google allow the authors to air their viewpoint on modern society in a very amusing way. I found this treatment very entertaining yet the book also works on a purely straight road adventure basis. When you get right down to it, The Journey Home is a book about the transformation of a mild mannered character into a stronger more self-reliant one and that's a pretty universal tale.

A Great Fun Read

A enjoyable sequel to their 1st book in the Ononokin universe. If you like Asprin's Myth, Inc. books, you will certainly enjoy this book & their previous on A Quest of Undoing. I highly recommend them both. While set in the same "universe", it is not necessary to have read the 1st one but you will probably want to after reading The Journey Home. I hope the authors continue with a 3rd book soon.

Fun read. We now have a new world to visit since Sir Terry Prachett left us with Disc World. May this be a long running and resourceful series also.
