About the Author
Robert W. Strayer (PhD, University of Wisconsin) taught African, Soviet, and world history for many years at SUNY College at Brockport, where he received Chancellor s Awards for Excellence in Teaching and for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1998 he was visiting professor of world and Soviet history at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since 2002, he has taught world history at the University of California, Santa Cruz; California State University, Monterey Bay; and Cabrillo College. His scholarship includes work in African history ("Kenya: Focus on Nationalism, " 1975; "The Making of Mission Communities in East Africa," 1978); Soviet history ("Why Did the Soviet Union Collapse?, "1998; "The Communist Experiment," 2007) and World History ("The Making of the Modern World," 1988, 1995; "Ways of the World," 2009, 2011). He is a long-time member of the World History Association and served on its Executive Committee."

Good content but bad delivery

I know it's a textbook for a college-level class, but its just a revised online edition. Which means that the cost of making this textbook and its digital value are far lower than the price. Furthermore, it turns out I don't need the book anymore and I can't return it. The content itself is good and concise, but I couldn't even get the LearningCurve app or MacMillan license, which I thought I would.

ore Enjoyable than Most, Accurate and Comprehensive Coverage, Some Features Missing

It's hard to make a history textbook interesting. While non-textbook, non-fiction history books tend to be liked by history lovers, even such people tend to dislike the textbooks of history. The same can not be said of the majority of, say, mathematics textbooks. Still, this textbook covers plenty of material in a pretty easy to read way. The material is also nicer to read than volume 2. The content could be slightly more to the point, but doing so would likely make it too terse to retain for most. All in all, it has a fairly unbiased coverage, is well written, and is edited quite thoroughly to reflect new evidence and to minimize errors. The emphasis on source analysis and the development rather than outcome of history is great.
I would prefer to see more information on the writing of history, good research skills, and connections to other fields. This is really the only obvious con aside from the issue of, despite beating most, being a bit on the dull side. If you can get into it though, say 10 pages of reading, the rest becomes quite enjoyable.
Aesthetically, the paper is great. The only downfall is that it will, as usual, bend a bit.
Overall: 8.5/10, with points being docked for the lack of features only.
