Lucky Pennies and Hot Chocolate, by Carol Diggory Shields

Whimsical watercolor illustrations and a breezy text evoke the warmth and charm shared by a child and his grandfather on a weekend visit. They have similar likes (trading knock-knock jokes, playing baseball, reading) and dislikes (wearing new clothes, eating "funny-looking" food, and--most of all--cleaning up). It would seem that Shields's on-target voice captures the simple, direct language of a child. But wait a minute--on the very last page it is revealed that Grandpa has been the one telling this story!

From Publishers Weekly
How does a grandfather enjoy time with his grandson (and vice versa)? Shields (Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp) counts the ways in this winsome picture book. "My favorite person in the world is coming for a visit," the narrator announces as a cheery watercolor illustration depicts grandfather and grandson greeting each other. The narrator then imagines all the fun things in store: sharing knock-knock jokes, snacks ("We love hot chocolate, with as many marshmallows as we want!"), a game of dominoes ("I hate to lose. Come on, just one more game") and a ride in the car with the top down ("Even when it's freezing"). But as the list of favorite pursuits draws to a close, readers will be surprised to learn who has been doing the talking. Skillfully blending warmth and youthful exuberance, Shields's lighthearted and immediate text holds appeal for a wide range of readers. Debut illustrator Nakata serves up a series of perky vignettes that seemingly dance on the white page. She creates a coziness with loose lines, homey details and plenty of smiling facesAsomething like a blend of the styles of Elisha Cooper, Holly Berry and Jennifer Plecas. If her approach is not wholly original, it's pleasing and easily captures the protagonists' tenderness and talent for fun. Ages 3-7. (Aug.)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K-This charming story shows what happens when "my favorite person in the world" comes for a visit. A boy and his grandfather like to tell knock-knock jokes (four are included), watch heavy machinery at work, cook, play dominoes, read a good book, and work on taking toys apart and putting them back together again. But, says the narrator, his guest hates to lose at games, and doesn't like kissy movies or cleaning up. The cozy and energetic relationship is echoed in the exuberant, loosely rendered watercolor illustrations that provide many enjoyable details. The short, punchy sentences; fresh, humorous language; and snappy ending will all involve readers. "Here's what I like. I like lucky pennies, hot chocolate, and knock-knock jokes. And my grandson does, too." It's a nice reversal of our assumptions about the narrator. Perfect and perfectly delightful.

From Booklist
The narrator's favorite person is coming to visit. He's very excited because he'll be able to tell the knock-knock jokes he's been saving, and have company when he watches holes being dug, drinks hot chocolate, and plays dominoes. Unfortunately, he may also have to dress up and go out to eat strange foods. Pictures show a grandpa and grandson engaged in joyful activities. The nifty twist is saved till the end. The narrator is not the little boy, as listeners will assume; it's the sweet grandfather. The illustrations are as warm, colorful, and winning as the story. The typeface, resembling a cross between handwriting and type, not only adds to the homey feel of the story but also will be easy on the eyes of youngsters (or the grandfathers reading to them). A Must for your children's library
By janet reksoatmodjo
The whole book is heartwarming and lovely, but the end is the real clincher. I read it over and over again the first time I checked it out from the library, and decided it had to be part of my kid's permanent collection. The book starts off with "My favorite person is coming to visit me today..." and goes on to take you through a story of two people sharing time together and enjoying the simple things in life, like hot chocolate "with as many marshmallows as you want". It teaches that part of love is sharing small things in common together, and you're never too old to enjoy the company of a little person if you don't lose touch with the kid inside yourself.

Comfort food for young and old
By loce_the_wizard
This gentle tale throws the reader a bit of a curve and leaves you with an "oh, yeah" affirmation. This story recounts the everyday adventures of a grandfather and his grandson, clearly two peas in a pod, who share a fondness for hot chocolate with tons of marshmallows, watching construction equipment, telling jokes, and just being in the "now."
Both the typography and illustrations evoke warmth and love, making this a great choice for reading to four- to seven-year-olds.

Heart Warming
By S. Conley
A co-worker showed me this book one day and after reading it I literally wanted to hug the book. It was so sweet. The illustrations are a perfect match to the loving story. The story is about a young boy and his grandfather and all the things they enjoy doing together. I'm neither a grandfather nor a grandson and I still loved this book dearly. I recommend it to anyone at all!
