A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts, by Andrew Chaikin

This acclaimed portrait of heroism and ingenuity captures a watershed moment in human history. The astronauts themselves have called it the definitive account of their missions. On the night of July 20, 1969, our world changed forever when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon. Based on in-depth interviews with twenty-three of the twenty-four moon voyagers, as well as those who struggled to get the program moving, A Man on the Moon conveys every aspect of the Apollo missions with breathtaking immediacy and stunning detail.

Amazon.com Review
A decade in the making, this book is based on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with each of the twenty-four moon voyagers, as well as those who contributed their brain power, training and teamwork on Earth. In his preface Chaikin writes, "We touched the face of another world and became a people without limits."

What follows are thrilling accounts of such remarkable experiences as the rush of a liftoff, the heart-stopping touchdown on the moon, the final hurdle of re-entry, competition for a seat on a moon flight, the tragic spacecraft fire, and the search for clues to the origin of the solar system on the slopes of lunar mountains.

"I've been there. Chaikin took me back."--Gene Cernan, Apollo 17 astronaut

From Publishers Weekly
Scheduled to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first lunar landing on July 20, 1969, this chronicle offers a comprehensive, often penetrating look at NASA's Apollo program. Originating in 1961, when President John Kennedy told Congress that the U.S. should attempt to land a man on the moon "before this decade is out," the program's last mission ended in December, 1972, with the splashdown of Apollo 17. Diary-like reports mix with first- and third-person accounts as Chaikin, an editor at Sky & Telescope magazine, delivers a chronological view of the missions and those who planned and flew them. Focusing closely on the Apollo astronauts, including Buzz Aldrin, Pete Conrad and Neil Armstrong, Chaikin gives his topic a sense of immediacy. But his treatment, lengthy as it is, reads more like an extended magazine article. Missing is a view of Apollo in a wider context, one that captures the mythos of our efforts to land on the moon. 40,000 first printing.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Science writer Chaikin spent eight years interviewing dozens of NASA flight controllers, engineers, technicians, and especially all 23 surviving astronauts who flew missions to the moon during the Apollo program. Fleshed out with never-before-published conversations taken from declassified on-board voice recorders, his book provides a vivid account of the first era of manned lunar exploration. Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the first landing, Chaikin's insightful telling refreshes the oft-repeated stories of these pioneering flights with new details, anecdotes, and reflections that convey what the experience was like for the astronauts. He also shows that, paradoxically for one of the most intensively reported stories of its time, how little we really understood what happened on that July night in 1969. Reminiscent of Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox's superb Apollo: The Race to the Moon (LJ 6/15/89), this is a highly recommended purchase for both public and academic libraries.

Best One Volume Book on Apollo
By Concerned Consumer
I've read this book numerous times since the first hardcover edition in 1994, and I never fail to learn something new. While there on many books on Apollo that a serious enthusiast should read, this is easily the SINGLE best book yet written. If you only ever read one book about the moon landings, then this should be it.

Chaikin is the only person to ever interview all 12 moonwalkers and get their personal feelings about everything from individual astronaut selection, crew selection, training, peer relations and best of all -- orbiting and walking on the moon. This is not a technical or scientific history, but an account of how the astronauts FELT about their entire Apollo experiences. You can easily "walk in their shoes" and "see through their eyes" with this book.

He writes in a way all persons can understand and simplifies the engineering and scientific aspects so you can understand what the astronauts were dealing with. Not only does he avoid getting bogged down in technical speak, but actually makes the technical parts fascinating to learn!

Although the moonwalkers are the primary focus of the book, Chaikin wrote a well-rounded history that encapsulates the entire Apollo story rather well. He didn't just interview moonwalkers, but also astronauts who stayed in orbit but still had valuable experiences to share. And Chaikin didn't stop there. Working as a brilliant historian should, he also spoke to the often neglected "ground people": i.e. family members, flight controllers, geologists, managers and administrators.

If you want a good summary of Project Apollo, I'd recommend four books:
"To A Rocky Moon: A Geologist's History of Lunar Exploration" - by Don Wilhems. This is the science side of the story, and quite fascinating!

"Apollo" - by Charles Murray and Catherine Bly Cox. An amazing book that discusses the often neglected side of Apollo -- the ground crew and Mission Control -- as well as other important support people. Your knowledge of spaceflight is incomplete without it.

"Full Moon" by Michael Light. A beautiful coffee table book with pictures that take your mind to the moon. With this you can almost see what the astronauts did!

And lastly, and most important of all, this book. . ."A Man on the Moon." It will almost make you feel like you were the fourth crewman.
The four together will give you the best sense of what happened at that fascinating time in history!

Without a doubt, THE book to read about the Apollo program!
By Chuck Johnson
I was 2 years old when Neil Armstrong placed the first boot print on the lunar surface, and after watching Apollo 13, I became curious as to what exactly it was that got us to the moon in the first place. In 6 months time I read "Lost Moon" by Jim Lovell, "Last Man on the Moon" by Gene Cernan, "The Race", "Schirra's Space" and "Deke!".
A Man on The Moon was the last book I read, and I can speak from firsthand experience when I say that if I would have read it up first, I would have had no need to read the others. That is NOT to say that all of the other books are not good, quality reads (with maybe the exception being Schirra's book), because they certainly are, but Andy Chaikin left absolutely nothing to the imagination and almost no stone unturned when he penned this exciting and informative book.
Even though I was just a toddler when our exploration of the lunar surface began, thanks to Andy Chaikin, I don't feel that I missed a single thing.

From the page to your mind!
By Mitch Reed
If you liked the HBO series "From The Earth To The Moon", you must read this book. Such a detailed account of the astronauts and the missions does not exist else where. Each mission is described separately, in great prose. A must buy for all serious space readers.

Review
Reviews of previous editions:

"An ideal briefing document...if you are just getting started - this book is a must."
Focus magazine

"Michael Harris does a great job on this book. In this book he recommends the view camera (instead of the typical 35mm). This book isn't really going to teach all aspects of how to use this camera or the equipment. However, there is pretty good coverage concerning lights and how to correct color with filters. He also gives a really good run down on what equipment to buy, composition, and different types of film.

If you want to learn a lot about architectural photography and its equipment, this is a really good book. If you want lots of specifics on view cameras, you'll need a different book." Reviewer from Amazon.com 5 star review

out dated
By CB611
I am disappointed with this book it is very dated. Talks mostly about film was last updated in 2003 does not deal at all with digital photography let alone HDR it was of absolutely no help to me. Equipment recommendations are large format camera and other associated studio types of lighting, and filters. Glad I only rented it.

It's Just What the Title Says!
By Daniel Payne
This book is a very useful and informative. It does a very good job of covering what makes professional interior photography work. Definitely a book for advanced amateurs or professionals. Would be great for a professional who is expanding their scope of work to include interior photography or who is looking for techniques or useful ideas. Harris does a very good job of describing appropriate camera and lighting equipment, lighting techniques, color correction processes, etc. The book is pretty much up-to-date and covers digital photography reasonably well. It is a very "hands-on" book from someone who obviously knows what they are doing. I probably would not recommend this to "snapshot" photographers, you might not get too much out of it.

A ROLLICKING ASSAULT ON SCIENCE'S INABILITY TO ANSWER LIFE'S MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

Alex Tsakiris has interviewed many bestselling authors and dozens of world-class academics on his popular science podcast Skeptiko.com. In this book he shares with us what he's learned through his 200 plus interviews with some of the world’s leading consciousness researchers and thinkers. In doing so, he reveals what the best research is saying about “big picture” science questions and the limits of science in general. What's he's learned, in short, is that science-as-we-know-it is an emperor-with-no-clothes-on proposition. It mesmerizes us with flashy trinkets, while failing at its core mission of leading us toward self-discovery. Science is wrong about almost everything because science depends on our consciousness being an illusion―and it’s not!

"Alex Tsakiris has articulated in this feisty work what many of us in the academy have felt but have not quite had the courage to say. Alex writes as our conscience here, as he calls us all to balk against the silly and self-contradictory script that is reductive materialism. Such a balking, Alex reminds us, does not make us creationists or anti-science, as the skeptics would have us believe. It makes us conscious beings who refuse this bizarre pact of unconsciousness, meaninglessness, and depression." ― Jeffrey J. Kripal, J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Religion, Rice University and author of Authors of the Impossible

"In the best of American traditions, Tsakiris is a plain-talking Everyman who speaks truth to power. Only, in this case, power is a scientific paradigm that has Ivy League academics and New York media intellectuals completely in its thrall. Are materialists right? Not if you follow the data. Tsakiris brings some giants to their knees, here, simply by asking smart, tough questions that no one has thought to ask. Fascinating stuff." ― Patricia Pearson, author of Opening Heaven's Door

"Tsakiris has distilled the essence of his podcast Skeptiko into a book as direct as his show-and equally necessary. If you want evidence that consciousness is not an illusion, that we are more than biological robots, this book is a great place to start." ― Steve Volk, writer-at-large for Philadelphia Magazine and author of Fringe-ology

Healthy, open, intellectual debate
By Don
“The emperor has no clothes” is how Mr. Tsakiris puts it. I prefer the Wizard of Oz metaphor. “Why Science Is Wrong…About Almost Everything” pulls back the curtain and reveals The Great and Powerful Oz to be a lot of hand waving and words with very little substance.

Through over 250 interviews with people who think and work both in the mainstream and at the fringes of mainstream science and philosophy, Alex Tsakiris takes the listeners of his Skeptiko.com podcast along with him on his journey of intellectual discovery. He and his listeners rediscover what was described over a century ago by the likes of Nietzsche and Max Weber: that the supposed secular humanism of the West is a scam and sham.

Each chapter of the book covers a different fringe area: consciousness, interpretations of quantum mechanics, reductionism, near death experiences, psychism, Sheldrake’s dog telepathy, and several other topics. Each chapter begins with comments by the author followed by excerpts of one or two interviews on the given topic. The book is a distillation of the Skeptiko.com podcast. Perhaps one could call it the “Cliff Notes” of the podcast.

The book functions as iconoclast to the views that are held in mainstream academia. What Alex learns is that these views are full of holes, both logically and methodologically. It is not just that these holes exist on the fringes of the mainstream views of reality, but sit squarely in its middle.

In particular, the issue of consciousness looms large. Alex comes face to face with the perennial paradox that has confronted all great thinkers of all ages such as Plato, Lao Tzu, Patanjali, and Kant: how can the conscious observer jump outside of his or herself and describe his or herself objectively? Obviously, they cannot. Alex calls to task those who presume they can.

For the full experience of this, there are hundreds of hours of podcast available for free download on the Skeptiko.com web site. For those who want the condensed version, this book serves the purpose.

For people who already appreciate that mainstream thinking in science and philosophy is a simple-minded religion for simpletons, this book will reinforce that view. For such people, the book serves as a fresh example of how someone (Alex) was able to climb out of the pit of nonsense that constitutes the myths and belief systems of the scientific techno-priest class of our modern era. For people still enamored by this mythology, the book will help guide you to clearer intellectual air.

In “Why Science Is Wrong…About Almost Everything”, Alex has learned that “the Emperor has no clothes”. I am eagerly awaiting the next book where Alex will discover the real depths of the mind and consciousness underneath the illusions of the pseudo-intellectual's "tempest in a teapot" that constitutes the mainstream consensus.

Disclaimer: I was a guest on Alex’s Skeptiko.com podcast. I found him to be very professional. I do not agree with all he has to say. In fact, I feel he does not go far enough, as reflected in my review above. But I respect what he is doing. Modern academia has become too “politically correct” in recent years, and straight-forward critical debate has dangerously declined. Alex is performing an essential function for healthy, open, intellectual debate, for which professional academia has dropped the ball.

An engaging, astonishing read--after the first 3 chapters
By Sharon Rawlette
I struggled with deciding how many stars to give this book. And even though I ultimately settled on a middling rating, it’s not because there isn’t superb material here.

The central chapters of the book—those dealing with near-death experiences, mediumship, telepathy, psychic detectives, and energy healing—had me on the edge of my seat. Tsakiris does a great job of bringing together the most important, paradigm-shifting moments in Skeptiko interview history and, by putting them back to back, showing us just how solidly the data stack up against a materialistic worldview. Even though I’d previously listened to these interviews on the Skeptiko podcast, I found myself reminded of crucial—and astonishing—details that had slipped my mind. The case for expanding our current scientific paradigm is really amazingly strong. And the middle chapters of the book do a good job of making that case with evidence from Skeptiko interviews.

The portion of the book that I found disappointing was the opening three chapters, especially the one on consciousness. I have a PhD in philosophy, which no doubt makes me a bit hard on the philosophical sections of the book. I understand that Tsakiris can’t be expected to discuss philosophy at an academic level, but I felt that he was too quick to dismiss the views of Patricia Churchland and Matt Dillahunty as absurd or incoherent, without first making the effort to understand exactly what those views are and why they are attractive to so many highly educated people. I used to hold similar views myself, and I think the primary reason I gave them up was because I repeatedly encountered evidence—personal as well as scientific—that the world contains a lot more meaning and mystery than physical reductionism makes room for. When it comes to busting scientific paradigms, evidence is more powerful than philosophical debate, and I believe the true strength of Tsakiris’s book lies in its dynamic, readable accounts of that evidence, beginning in Chapter 4.

WHY SCIENCE IS WRONG expands on our current notions of reality.
By DMitch
Science has taken us into the 21st Century with a well established beachhead in attempting to understand this physical material reality. It stretches from cosmology, to the nature of consciousness, to the depths of particle physics behavior. We must remember though that science itself is only a method and what it can say about what it measures is limited by those who do the measurements. Alex Tsakiris engages the reader with sometimes an aggressive counter argument that science naturalism has become an irrational belief of myopic science skeptics not unlike the thesis religions they criticize. Credible research data is available and this book cites valid studies and opens the door to question the atheist skeptical mindset. Mr. Tsakiris shows through compilations of interviews with experts both pro and con the fallacies which have led current science empiricism down a one way dead end street. Proponents of reductive materialism rarely consider the psychology of their own biases, are steeped in group think and often openly seek to suppress any data or research that doesn't conform to a strictly materialist viewpoint. Why Science Is Wrong About Almost Everything rejects reductive materialism as a false ideology. It summarizes hundreds of interviews, from his biweekly Skeptiko podcasts, with scientists and PH.D researchers. Discusses the different hypothesis about mind and consciousness and the research into such areas as the near death experience and mediumship. This book attempts to convey that reality has a much richer depth. Consciousness is a much more profound mystery then what current science allows. A worthy read if you study this with open skepticism and curiosity.

The Responsible Company: What We've Learned From Patagonia's First 40 Years, by Yvon Chouinard, Vincent Stanley

The Responsible Company, by Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia, and Vincent Stanley, co-editor of its Footprint Chronicles, draw on the their 40 years' experience at Patagonia – and knowledge of current efforts by other companies – to articulate the elements of responsible business for our time.

Patagonia, named by Fortune in 2007 as the coolest company on the planet, has earned a reputation as much for its ground-breaking environmental and social practices as for the quality of its clothes. In this exceptionally frank account, Chouinard and Stanley recount how the company and its culture gained the confidence, by step and misstep, to make its work progressively more responsible, and to ultimately share its discoveries with companies as large as Wal-Mart or as small as the corner bakery.

In plain, compelling prose, the authors describe the current impact of manufacturing and commerce on the planet’s natural systems and human communities, and how that impact now forces business to change its ways. The Responsible Company shows companies how to reduce the harm they cause, improve the quality of their business, and provide the kind of meaningful work everyone seeks. It concludes with specific, practical steps every business can undertake, as well as advice on what to do, in what order.

This is the first book to show companies how to thread their way through economic sea change and slow the drift toward ecological bankruptcy. Its advice is simple but powerful: reduce your environmental footprint (and its skyrocketing cost), make legitimate products that last, reclaim deep knowledge of your business and its supply chain to make the most of opportunities in the years to come, and earn the trust you’ll need by treating your workers, customers and communities with respect.

Review

“If you have any doubt at all that doing right by the natural world is good for the bottom line, please, stop right now, wherever you are, find a seat, put the smartphone on mute, and read this freaking book. Yvon and Vincent aren’t here to bum you out about a planet turning to desert, or to shame you into anything. They affirm that the ingenuity and hard work required to clean up our offices and industries will be the most rewarding (and profitable) work we do.”--Brad Wieners, Executive Editor, Bloomberg BusinessWeek

From the Back Cover
Over the past 40 years, Patagonia has consistently done the outrageous and unusual -- switched to exclusive use of organic cotton clothes, introduced recycled (and recyclable) underwear and fleece, and created an interactive website, the Footprint Chronicles, to clue customers in to the social and environmental impact of Patagonia's products. The company's Common Threads Initiative redefines the relationship between company and customer, to help reduce consumption, wrest the full life out of every product made, and recycle or repurpose what can no longer be used.

The Elements of Responsible Business
By Nora Gallagher
The Responsible Company is like the Elements of Style, that basic guide to writing that has served so many writers and readers. In beautifully written, clean prose, it boils down the basics of responsibility to employees, customers and the planet. There is another way to do business besides the quick profit and the scorched earth policy of so many corporations. There is another way to do business and survive as a business. Even make a profit.
I recommend this book especially to people who do not read business books, whose inclination might be toward literary essays or novels. It's a great read and you will know so much more about the realities of the business world, and the often agonizing decisions Patagonia had to make to get to where it is now: a company trying to earn the
right to call itself responsible.

Read this book!
By Josephine Ireland
The Responsible Company is surprisingly hard to put down and the antidote to all the discouraging news about corporate America. Simple in concept, it describes clearly and succinctly why we need to revamp our collective business practice before the planet's resources run out, then provides practical checklists for how to go about it. The authors draw on their own experiences at Patagonia, describing some of the moments that "stunned them into consciousness", and also bring news of other companies who have come to the table--DuPont, Nike, and Wal-Mart among them--and some of the surprising and heartening coalitions they've formed. The writing is excellent, the voice that of someone you'd be happy to find yourself seated next to at an interesting dinner party. Despite the credibility of Patagonia--I always think of them as a company that tries to "walk the walk"--the tone is one of humility; there's an inherent conflict between making and selling products that consume resources and create waste and acting responsibly, and Chouinard and Stanley acknowledge it and are candid about how far Patagonia or anyone else is from achieving real sustainability. Still, it's a hopeful book, one I wish everyone would read.

Radar Principles for the Non-Specialist, by John C. Toomay

What This Book Is This book is about radar. It will teach you the essentials of radar, the underlying principles. It is not like an engineering handbook which pro vides detailed design equations without explaining either derivation or rationale. It is not like a graduate school textbook which may be abstruse and esoteric to the point of incomprehensibility. And it is not like an anthology of popular magazine articles which may be gaudy but superfi cial. It is an attempt to distill the very complex, rich technology of radar into its fundamentals, tying them to the laws of nature on one end and to the most modern and complex systems on the other. Who It's For If your work requires you to supervise or meet as coequals with radar systems engineers or designers, this book will allow you to understand them, to question them intelligently and perhaps to provide them with a perspective (a dispassionate yet competent view) that they lack. If you are trained in another discipline but have been made the man ager of a radar project or a system program that has one or more radars as sub-systems, this book will provide you with the tools you need, not only to give your team members confidence, but also to make a substantive technical contribution yourself.

pound for pound one of the best
By Alan A. Thomas
This book has the fewest errors and least misleading information on radar and propagation pound-for-pound of any books on electromagnetism I have seen. It outclasses Skolnik et al. It will not be found suitable for academic instruction because it is way too concise and is not threaded with obtuse mathematical premise as is wont of high level education, eventhough it has questions and answers with each chapter. This is your little book of big radar and electromagnetics.
