A ROLLICKING ASSAULT ON SCIENCE'S INABILITY TO ANSWER LIFE'S MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

Alex Tsakiris has interviewed many bestselling authors and dozens of world-class academics on his popular science podcast Skeptiko.com. In this book he shares with us what he's learned through his 200 plus interviews with some of the world’s leading consciousness researchers and thinkers. In doing so, he reveals what the best research is saying about “big picture” science questions and the limits of science in general. What's he's learned, in short, is that science-as-we-know-it is an emperor-with-no-clothes-on proposition. It mesmerizes us with flashy trinkets, while failing at its core mission of leading us toward self-discovery. Science is wrong about almost everything because science depends on our consciousness being an illusion―and it’s not!

"Alex Tsakiris has articulated in this feisty work what many of us in the academy have felt but have not quite had the courage to say. Alex writes as our conscience here, as he calls us all to balk against the silly and self-contradictory script that is reductive materialism. Such a balking, Alex reminds us, does not make us creationists or anti-science, as the skeptics would have us believe. It makes us conscious beings who refuse this bizarre pact of unconsciousness, meaninglessness, and depression." ― Jeffrey J. Kripal, J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Religion, Rice University and author of Authors of the Impossible

"In the best of American traditions, Tsakiris is a plain-talking Everyman who speaks truth to power. Only, in this case, power is a scientific paradigm that has Ivy League academics and New York media intellectuals completely in its thrall. Are materialists right? Not if you follow the data. Tsakiris brings some giants to their knees, here, simply by asking smart, tough questions that no one has thought to ask. Fascinating stuff." ― Patricia Pearson, author of Opening Heaven's Door

"Tsakiris has distilled the essence of his podcast Skeptiko into a book as direct as his show-and equally necessary. If you want evidence that consciousness is not an illusion, that we are more than biological robots, this book is a great place to start." ― Steve Volk, writer-at-large for Philadelphia Magazine and author of Fringe-ology

Healthy, open, intellectual debate
By Don
“The emperor has no clothes” is how Mr. Tsakiris puts it. I prefer the Wizard of Oz metaphor. “Why Science Is Wrong…About Almost Everything” pulls back the curtain and reveals The Great and Powerful Oz to be a lot of hand waving and words with very little substance.

Through over 250 interviews with people who think and work both in the mainstream and at the fringes of mainstream science and philosophy, Alex Tsakiris takes the listeners of his Skeptiko.com podcast along with him on his journey of intellectual discovery. He and his listeners rediscover what was described over a century ago by the likes of Nietzsche and Max Weber: that the supposed secular humanism of the West is a scam and sham.

Each chapter of the book covers a different fringe area: consciousness, interpretations of quantum mechanics, reductionism, near death experiences, psychism, Sheldrake’s dog telepathy, and several other topics. Each chapter begins with comments by the author followed by excerpts of one or two interviews on the given topic. The book is a distillation of the Skeptiko.com podcast. Perhaps one could call it the “Cliff Notes” of the podcast.

The book functions as iconoclast to the views that are held in mainstream academia. What Alex learns is that these views are full of holes, both logically and methodologically. It is not just that these holes exist on the fringes of the mainstream views of reality, but sit squarely in its middle.

In particular, the issue of consciousness looms large. Alex comes face to face with the perennial paradox that has confronted all great thinkers of all ages such as Plato, Lao Tzu, Patanjali, and Kant: how can the conscious observer jump outside of his or herself and describe his or herself objectively? Obviously, they cannot. Alex calls to task those who presume they can.

For the full experience of this, there are hundreds of hours of podcast available for free download on the Skeptiko.com web site. For those who want the condensed version, this book serves the purpose.

For people who already appreciate that mainstream thinking in science and philosophy is a simple-minded religion for simpletons, this book will reinforce that view. For such people, the book serves as a fresh example of how someone (Alex) was able to climb out of the pit of nonsense that constitutes the myths and belief systems of the scientific techno-priest class of our modern era. For people still enamored by this mythology, the book will help guide you to clearer intellectual air.

In “Why Science Is Wrong…About Almost Everything”, Alex has learned that “the Emperor has no clothes”. I am eagerly awaiting the next book where Alex will discover the real depths of the mind and consciousness underneath the illusions of the pseudo-intellectual's "tempest in a teapot" that constitutes the mainstream consensus.

Disclaimer: I was a guest on Alex’s Skeptiko.com podcast. I found him to be very professional. I do not agree with all he has to say. In fact, I feel he does not go far enough, as reflected in my review above. But I respect what he is doing. Modern academia has become too “politically correct” in recent years, and straight-forward critical debate has dangerously declined. Alex is performing an essential function for healthy, open, intellectual debate, for which professional academia has dropped the ball.

An engaging, astonishing read--after the first 3 chapters
By Sharon Rawlette
I struggled with deciding how many stars to give this book. And even though I ultimately settled on a middling rating, it’s not because there isn’t superb material here.

The central chapters of the book—those dealing with near-death experiences, mediumship, telepathy, psychic detectives, and energy healing—had me on the edge of my seat. Tsakiris does a great job of bringing together the most important, paradigm-shifting moments in Skeptiko interview history and, by putting them back to back, showing us just how solidly the data stack up against a materialistic worldview. Even though I’d previously listened to these interviews on the Skeptiko podcast, I found myself reminded of crucial—and astonishing—details that had slipped my mind. The case for expanding our current scientific paradigm is really amazingly strong. And the middle chapters of the book do a good job of making that case with evidence from Skeptiko interviews.

The portion of the book that I found disappointing was the opening three chapters, especially the one on consciousness. I have a PhD in philosophy, which no doubt makes me a bit hard on the philosophical sections of the book. I understand that Tsakiris can’t be expected to discuss philosophy at an academic level, but I felt that he was too quick to dismiss the views of Patricia Churchland and Matt Dillahunty as absurd or incoherent, without first making the effort to understand exactly what those views are and why they are attractive to so many highly educated people. I used to hold similar views myself, and I think the primary reason I gave them up was because I repeatedly encountered evidence—personal as well as scientific—that the world contains a lot more meaning and mystery than physical reductionism makes room for. When it comes to busting scientific paradigms, evidence is more powerful than philosophical debate, and I believe the true strength of Tsakiris’s book lies in its dynamic, readable accounts of that evidence, beginning in Chapter 4.

WHY SCIENCE IS WRONG expands on our current notions of reality.
By DMitch
Science has taken us into the 21st Century with a well established beachhead in attempting to understand this physical material reality. It stretches from cosmology, to the nature of consciousness, to the depths of particle physics behavior. We must remember though that science itself is only a method and what it can say about what it measures is limited by those who do the measurements. Alex Tsakiris engages the reader with sometimes an aggressive counter argument that science naturalism has become an irrational belief of myopic science skeptics not unlike the thesis religions they criticize. Credible research data is available and this book cites valid studies and opens the door to question the atheist skeptical mindset. Mr. Tsakiris shows through compilations of interviews with experts both pro and con the fallacies which have led current science empiricism down a one way dead end street. Proponents of reductive materialism rarely consider the psychology of their own biases, are steeped in group think and often openly seek to suppress any data or research that doesn't conform to a strictly materialist viewpoint. Why Science Is Wrong About Almost Everything rejects reductive materialism as a false ideology. It summarizes hundreds of interviews, from his biweekly Skeptiko podcasts, with scientists and PH.D researchers. Discusses the different hypothesis about mind and consciousness and the research into such areas as the near death experience and mediumship. This book attempts to convey that reality has a much richer depth. Consciousness is a much more profound mystery then what current science allows. A worthy read if you study this with open skepticism and curiosity.
